Both Salon Cu and Amal Niccoli are now charging $40, which is more than I'd like to pay given that I'm not asking for anything terribly complicated (straight hair cut to just above the hairline, same length all the way around, light layering, sidesweep bang). I know Judy Jetson has been recommended on here before; does anyone know what their current base rates are? Or have suggestions for other places that are under $40? (I'm living in Medford now, but I still go through Davis Square on my way home and am happy to take the T somewhere if it's a good place for a good price.)

I like Mario's in Davis. A cut without a wash is, I think, $30.

I second that. Ask for Mario himself - I have him cut my hair, and I've always been happy with it. (Maria, on the other hand, I've been not so keen on.) I've got no familiarity with any of the others.

Thirding Mario's, though I've liked Maria.

I've been going to Andrea at Salon Femia for 8 years: a wash/cut/dry is $37. Yeah, it's close to $40.... but it's worth it for me, and she knows my hair.

I'm glad you asked this, I've been wanting to ask this myself. $40 is ridiculous. There IS a law that they can't charge a woman more. But they get away with it. I've researched almost every place in Somerville and places in Cambridge near Davis, the only places I could find was Fahsionway in Union. Their site says $18+ for a haircut. Not sure if they actually charge more and couldn't find many reviews. I've also heard that Aprils in Davis is on the cheaper side. I've heard good things about them.

Well, Salon Cu actually charges according to the length of hair and the style of cut. I am female, but get charged their "men's cut" price because I wear my hair short.

Though, I acknowledge that they should make that more clear in their pricing.

My nanny swears by Floyd's (http://www.floydsbarbershop.com/), which is dirt cheap and has a location near Porter. I've never been myself (my hair *is* a little complicated, by which I mean "curly", which apparently makes it too confusing for most people, which means $40 sounds good to me...)

Floyd's wrecked my hair.

I've never known too much about hair, so you can take or leave my advice! I have long, straight-wavy messy hair.

I got my hair cut in Medford Sq at the Chris Capri Unisex Salon today for $22. Wash, simple blunt cut with angling, and dry. Last time they charged $29, but it was a different person. Jean, who cut my hair, thought that it would be fun to curl it a bit for volume, and it looks really cute. She tossed that in for free and for fun, and said she'd straighten next time.

I used to go to Judy Jetson's also when I lived closer to there. They know a lot about hair and I found it a little intimidating, but I always got a decent cut for somewhere in the $35 range.

Renaissance in Teele. Martha, the owner, has been cutting my hair for years -- she's cheap (in the $20-25 range, I think; I don't get haircuts that often, so it's been awhile) -- and good.

Craigslist.

I looked there and found that Mario Russo on Newbury had cutting classes on Tuesday nights. Because the class kept being moved when I wanted to come in, they let a regular stylist cut my hair in their salon for $25!!

I go to Cassandra at the Nicholas Call Salon at the corner of Boston Ave & North St in Medford, on the 94. It's $35 for the haircut, which is right under your limit, but she's awesome.

I'll second Floyd's. I have at least 4 friends who've been happy with cuts there recently, too.
