so i went to the verizon page to find out about fixing my cell, and found a really sweet deal for DSL service. they're offering DSL for 29.95/month, with the first month free (including a DSL modem and self-install kit). that's just 5 more than i'm paying for 'accelerated' dialup. or 10 more than i could be paying for a probably-better dialup ISP. AND, deal upon deals, they are now offering a 99.95 Linksys wireless router with a full 99.95 mail-in rebate. i checked out the service agreement and tried to poke around for hidden charges, but besides a 12.95 shipping fee for the modem etc., didn't find nothin'. not even shipping for the router.

so go to it, if you haven't already. you have to already have home verizon residential service.

sorry for the gushing endorsement. i'm just happy to consider fast affordable wireless access.

except, um, you do know there service record for davis square sucks, right? just recently they left people with no service for three whole days.

i've never once had a problem with rcn and their tech support is always really smart and capable.

We had such a bad experience with Verizon service and billing it passed straight through horror and into farce.

Ditto

I was a Verizon DSL customer in Waltham before I moved to Somerville, and I cannot begin to describe the incompetence. I now have RCN cable modem, and it *is* faster, and the RCN people are a thousand percent better to deal with.

We've been happy with Cyberonic DSL for the past year or so. Before that we had speakeasy, but it was a little too expensive.

$40/month for 18 months at 1.5 down 768k up is not bad (with a static IP address, which I like)... Also, the DSL modem they gave us is apparently also a router, though I already had one, so we don't use that feature.

years ago, i had Verizon DSL. it had very regular service problems. finally i cancelled it and got speakeasy ... which had even worse problems. after months of outages and problems they couldn't resolve, i finally cancelled, paid my cancellation fee, and got a cable modem. i've been happy with it for ... four or five years now. same IP address, even.

the epilogue to Verizon? they kept billing me. for three years. sent me to collections. for three years of service not delivered. they finally gave up and went away, and my credit record seems to be mysteriously intact.

fuck verizon.

i now subscribe to "basic" cable TV service -- the one they don't really want you to subscribe to. it just carries the broadcast channels and public access, no SciFi, no Nick, no MTV, no CNN. it's about $10/month, and provides a $15/month discount off my cable modem bill. and no more interference during Buffy, Angel or Smallville. :)

oh -- comcast, btw. i'd like RCN's higher data rates but don't want to pay their higher fees. (last time i checked, anyway. that was a couple years ago!)
