Antonia's

I've noticed Antonia's has been closed for the past 2 weeks or so, there's no sign posted saying on vacation or explaining why they are closed, plus their menu was removed from the display case by the door.

A few weeks back there was this post on LJ  that they are expanding into the spa next door, I just find it strange
for a place to be closed with no explanation posted.

Anyone know what's going on?

There were also rumors farther back (which I can't locate quickly) that a "turnkey establishment" restaurant in Davis was trying to sell, which many folks thought/hoped might be Antonia's. Unsubstantiated rumors had it that JP's Ten Tables was considering the space for a second location (or maybe just moving?) but I never saw anything official.

Consider Pescatore, in Ball Square, for your Italian pasta and fish, which may make you wonder why Antonia's lasted as long as it did. For those wishing, however, to continue ordering burned garlic and rubber shrimp, try the North End.

The rumors about Ten Tables were certainly not unsubstantiated. I talked with Rebekah about it and the TT owner (a Somerville resident) was definitely eyeing the Antonia's space for a second location. TT passed on the last round of liquor license applications in the spring, and I haven't heard any more since. I wouldn't hold my breath for them, though.

The limited number of available beer-and-wine licenses for the Davis Square area was a major factor, in that several other restaurants were 'in line' for the very few licenses made available in the spring, and TT wasn't even confirmed for the location yet.

From what I heard, however, the reason they didn't even show up at the meeting to petition for a license was that the location itself didn't pan out. Something about the landlord demanding a big cut of the profits.

A friend of mine knows that chef at Ten Tables and they are opening their second location in Cambridge, in the space that the Craigie Street Bistro is vacating for a larger location in Central Square...

I hope they aren't truly closed - they had amazingly good food. Anyone?
