From the Somerville News:

Trane concedes, Sciortino wins on stickers

By George P. Hassett

Carl Sciortino's name was not on the ballot yet he still managed to hold onto his state rep. seat today, defeating challenger Bob Trane on a sticker campaign.

A few minutes ago at the Sons of Italy in Medford, Trane conceded the race and told cheering supporters, "We went up against a machine and fought the good fight."

Early unofficial returns point to a Sciortino victory. With seven precincts reporting, he led Trane 1,780 votes to 1,472, according to unofficial results.

Last I knew, George Hassett wrote for the Somerville News, not the Journal.

I would like to take this opportunity to officially spit on the Somerville News. They kept kicking Carl while he was down and that was disgusting.

The News's treamtent of Carl (and Pat Jehlen, and Rebekah Gewirtz) has been disgraceful. I do not lay any of the blame for this on George Hassett, who strikes me as being a good writer and a generally decent person.

Thinking about it more, it is possible that the Somerville News secretly favored Carl while only pretending to be in favor of Bob Trane, for some reason. The entire slandering season against Carl was just a way to outrage and mobilize Carl's supporters and ensuring his victory. Thank you, Norton boys.

Man, I am sorely tempted to swing by. However, I am having trouble procuring an armed escort to bodyguard me.

I can only imagine the collective atmosphere; the guys were probably thinking they'd be halfway through a 72-hour bender right now. Whoops.

Their editors and a lot of their commentors are nothing but grade-f Howie Carr wannabes.

Dunno, I think Bill Shelton is OK. The guy who keeps writing about old Somerville (Jimmy, I think) is fine too. Part of the problem is that, when a site allows clearly racist and homophobic comments, then it has no credibility.

I don't understand why they switched to moderating comments, but then didn't bother to moderate out the worst offenders.

I don't think racism or homophobia fall under the definition of "worst" for the Somerville News any more than they do for Howie Carr.
