From the Somerville News:

Trane concedes, Sciortino wins on stickers

By George P. Hassett

Carl Sciortino's name was not on the ballot yet he still managed to hold onto his state rep. seat today, defeating challenger Bob Trane on a sticker campaign.

A few minutes ago at the Sons of Italy in Medford, Trane conceded the race and told cheering supporters, "We went up against a machine and fought the good fight."

Early unofficial returns point to a Sciortino victory. With seven precincts reporting, he led Trane 1,780 votes to 1,472, according to unofficial results.

Come on now--that was a machine. I'm a Carl supporter, but the number of calls, visits, and mailers I received was astounding. Carl's success in this election is due to massive support from one or two special interests that put on a massive get out the vote effort.

It was an organization. A large, effective one. However, "machine" carries other connotations, because it was a term mainly used to describe the big city political machines of the past century. Machines were corrupt, based on rewarding political volunteering with city jobs, city contracts, and jobs with city contractors.

Fair point, but allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment (and please keep in mind that I'm Carl supporter). At what point does an organization of committed supporters become a machine?

I think that happens if it becomes corrupt and starts trading political work for favors from government, the sorts of things that should not take political support into consideration. Traditionally, it was city jobs & city contracts.
