I don't think it ever got resolved on livejournal, as to why Antonia's has been closed. I tried finding the last post on it, and couldn't find it. I was getting sick of walking by and wonder what the deal is.

So I gave the Revere Antonia's a call to see what was up with the Davis Sq Antonia's. The guy who answered told me officially that it was closed for good in Somerville, because they were having problems with the landlord.

Also, Urban Gourmet won't be reopening in Ball Sq.

It won't?!? Wait, tell me more! I can't say I'm surprised after all this time, but WANT...CUBAN...SANDWICH...oh, the pain. It literally burned down hours after I moved to the neighborhood (and ate a Cuban sandwich). Any idea what's going in that space?

Do you know about City Slicker Cafe on Beacon? They owned UG then opened CS after Sounbites bought 'em out. Very yummy, and nice folks.

Well, there goes the best Italian place in the area. Damn it.

Alfresco is much better than Antonia's and it's just down Highland.

I struggle to imagine them having better gnocci, but it shall be attempted.

The gnocchi at Antonia's left me cold the first, oh, three times I tried them. Alfresco has AMAZING gnocchi with tomato cream sauce.

Chez Henri in Cambridge has the best Cuban Sandwiches. You can only get them in the bar, not in the restaurant.

D'oh! Yes. And I actually typed that before "correcting" myself to Beacon.

To compensate, here's their web site (http://www.cityslickercafe.com/).

I have heard this, but not checked it out. Nice to hear the rumor is ubiquitous, though.

I never knew there was another Antonia's. Is it open year-round or only during the summer beach season?

except the risotto I had it twice there and *shudder* they used long grain white rice. instead of the creamy texture you got a chewy grainy rather bland fried rice.

They redeemed themselves with a few other dishes but that was a big fail in my book.

It's been the slowest rebuilding job ever, but they appear to be almost finished, like 3 years after the fire. I wait for the bus in front of it every day.

I dunno. Their risotto is definitely not traditional, but I can make that at home if I want to. They add lemon, which intrigues me to no end. It's different, but I kinda like it.

I second Pescatore for Italian - their homemade fusilli is AMAZING.

Lil Vinny's, Pescatore, Vinny's at night...

There's a slew of places in the area that have better Italian than Antonia's or Alfresco's (which routinely turns me off with their bad service)

Here's that earlier post about Antonia's, though it's not especially useful. Clicking on the tag is always a good way to find earlier posts on a subject.

Are Lil Vinny's and Vinny's at Night related in any way? I hardly ever get over that direction to eat.

Date: 2008-09-24 05:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mderidder.livejournal.com
I believe that they are two brothers or cousins who don't get along and basically operate competing restaurants. As I understand Vinny's at night is the original, Lil Vinny's is newer. Opinions I've heard are definitely split over which is better.

I noticed they finally started rebuilding UG as well.

Three weeks before i leave forever :gnash:

UG was awesome because as a non-Italian food eater i could still find excellent menu choices while my pizza eating friends ordered pizzas. The stock Chef Salad at most other pizza joints get old after a year or two.

UG, i shall miss thee!

I have to say, I just had a risotto there last week and it was both good and made with short grain white rice.

funnily enough, I always make mine at home with lemon. It's an awesome addition.
