I was eating at Picante around 6pm on Sunday (the 28th) when I heard fire trucks and saw firefighters heading toward the middle of Davis, on Elm. I looked down the street in that direction, and there were 5 or 6 fire trucks. People walking down the street (from there, toward me) hadn't seen anything on fire, nor had they noticed people being evacuated.

Anyone know what was up? I meant to ask at Diesel when I went there later, but I forgot. A false alarm seems likely, but what kind of false alarm draws that many trucks and people?

I called the police once for an incipient fight with no visible weapons (it was midnight. they were on my porch. ewwww.) and they showed up with four cruisers. Four. (Which, by the way, made me feel awfully safe: instantaneous response, plus eight cops who had nothing better to do at midnight than break up a fight...)

So it might have just been that the firefighters had nothing better to do.

I could also believe that a brief power surge or power outage in that densely commercial an area could trigger a lot of fire alarms and automated fire-department-calling systems.
