Several properties around here own spiral staircases and I'm considering one to replace a rickety wooden version. One person I know suggested using a kit to build my own, but my time doesn't really allow for the process of a) DIY or b) doing it well.

Has anyone used a contractor to build their own stairs, either as a custom job or from a kit? I'm looking at the stairs themselves plus first and second floor landings. It'd be great to know of companies that did a great job or even those to avoid.

UPDATE: This is for outdoor use and would replace an external wooden staircase.

Is this for outdoor or indoor use? About 10 years ago, when I lived in Boston, I had a contractor sub out to a company on the South Shore who welded up spiral for us. It was craned to the roof and dropped through a skylight. But normally, that's only viable for outdoor use. For indoors, you'd want the kit. I can look for the name of the sub if it'd be any use to you, but I'm not sure I have it.

You mean a metal one?

Or you don't care about the material?

I know someone who looked into replacing a very steep staircase with a spiral and found that the code issues were actually quite difficult, in his situation, at least. He ended up adding a small dormer and putting in a standard, turning staircase. I don't know if the 7th edition of state building code may have changed that at all.

Went through my records and found I don't have the name of the fabricator. Sorry about that. I understand that kits are fairly easy to install, however, so maybe just try a general contractor or builder?

As noted by a previous poster, code issues come into play, but they may be different for a second means of egress, which I presume the exterior stair would be.
