I want to meet like-minded women and see some great visual art, plays, etc. Anybody know of any upcoming artsy events/performances/groups/etc. that feature women's art/performances? I like all genres of visual and performing arts. I know awesome women don't only go to women-only stuff, but it's a start.

And, for the record, by women's art, I don't mean quilting bees (unless there's lots of booze) or va-jay-jay portrait parties, just interesting art made by women.

Women in Film and Video. They have a "Chicks Make Flicks" film series, one of which is tonight at 7 at MIT.

maybe you should lay off the booze and quilt for a bit. your third sentence makes no sense.

if your goal is to find out about art in a certain vein, it may be more helpful to list some examples of what you like rather than saying "artsy" or dismissing other types of visual art.

I had a roommate who blew rent money on attending Mama Gena's "school". She had hoped it would help her find a sugardaddy. Instead she ended up out thousands of dollars and got a pink boa, plastic tiara, Mama Gena's book, a t-shirt that she painted her *ahem* self-portrait on [or an intimate partial one], and a diploma of Mama-jargon.

as a matter-of-fact, yes, puffy AND glitter paints were used.

Vagina portraits? Huh. Didn't know they had vagina portrait parties. Doesn't seem like a whole lot of fun, painting genitalia.

That remind me of the paintings currently up in Mariposa over at Central, which have quite a few penises in them for no explicable reason.

Imagine if men did this. We could have...

HA!

Somehow, I don't think a group of men, sitting in a room, staring at penises with rapt absorption will have many takers. Some, certainly, but some of those will probably be terribly disappointed.

That should be a tag unto itself.

I don't know, that cow skull one is a bit too phallic for my tastes. Maybe I'll just stick with something soothing, like Goya.

If you're into performance arts, there are two meet ups.

One is called BU Spin Jam which is a bunch of people hooping, doing rope dart, spinning poi, yoga, contortion, and staff. There are quite a few women there. If you saw the front page of The Boston Phoenix a couple of weeks ago... it's the same people. They meet Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The group can vary from 5 people to (at one point) 60.

There's another skill share group called "The Grass Hoppers" who meet on Wednesday nights from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. They focus on pretty much the same stuff as mentioned above, but I think it's a little more focused on choreographing moves together, and is a bit smaller as it just started up.

Both meet at the Sergeant Activities Center near the BU Central Stop on the green line.

There's an art opening at the Washington Street Art Center (http://www.washingtonst.org/) in Union Square on Saturday night. This would be a good show to see since it's a group show, and most of the artists at the Center are women. Cool people at the openings too.

Have you tried meetup.com? I have found it to be a great way to hook up with people with similar interests.
