The only one I've seen of those is W. While it held my attention, there were some (IMO) casting flaws that distracted me. I wouldn't tell you to not see it, though.

I've heard great things about The Secret Life of Bees, but haven't seen it.

Appaloosa is the only one I've seen.

Pros:

* Good acting by Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris
* Some cute and amusing bits in the dialog between them

Cons:

* Predictable nearly every step of the way
* Much less gritty and action-oriented than I had expected
* Renee Zellweger's acting

I'm a HUGE Viggo fan, but this is one movie of his that I'm not likely to buy.

I haven't seen any of those yet, so my remarks are second hand. With that caveat:

- Changeling: My movie reviewer friend says it is fantastic, great performance by Angie, but it is bleak, bleak, dark and grim. If you are in the mood for that sort of movie, go for it.

- The Secret Life of Bees: The book was fantastic. Looks like a great chick flick, with a good cast. I really want to see it.

- W: The same movie reviewer friend reports that this is a wait for DVD/cable movie. It's a series of vignettes, Thandies' Condi is hysterical but sadly only in the movie for ten minutes, and he feels that the punches were pulled too much. Funny, yes, but could have been much better.

I don't have any info about the other two! Happy viewing.

I'm probably too late, depending on when you were planning to go, but I saw Nick & Norah last night and it was awesome. And I say that as someone who absolutely adored the book as well. (Actually, I'm not sure if you will consider that a point in its favor, or a point against.) But I thought it was really great, and captured the spirit of the book really well. But you probably do have to like teen romantic comedy. Having a nostalgic fondness for teenage nights in NYC is a bonus too. (Though the nostalgia need not be based on any actual experiences.)

So what does Nick & Norah have to do with The Thin Man? It does not sound like a remake.

Nothing to do with The Thin Man, as far as I know. The movie is based on a young adult book of the same name by David Levithan and Rachel Cohen. But it's entirely possible that Levithan & Cohen are fans of The Thin Man, and that might be where they chose the names Nick & Norah from.

It's been a while since I've seen any of the Thin Man movies, so I can't say for sure that there's no real connection, but I can't think of any similarities. Also, the person who originally introduced me to the book is a pretty big Thin Man fan, so if there was a connection, I assume she would've mentioned it.

So what does Nick & Norah have to do with The Thin Man? It does not sound like a remake.

It was going to be but the script was heavily rewritten in preproduction.

(I'm joking, but this could happen: there's an "adaptation" of "The Maltese Falcon" that changes everything about the story, right down to the Maltese Falcon itself).
