I mostly ask because I'm wondering if there are any farms around who have quince, as I've been reading about it and would really like to try cooking it. I'm also curious if there are any vegetables available nowadays except for various squash-like things. Thanks!

I don't remember ever seeing quince at the farmer's market (not that this is definitive, of course), but if you are more focused on getting the quince than getting it from the farmer's market, I know that Russo's in Watertown carries quince.

Vegetable-wise, there were carrots, various types of potatoes, onions, and assorted greens when I was there today. (And squash, of course.) I got there at 4, though, so there might have been more stuff earlier. It's definitely winding down.

All sorts of lettuce, spinach, squash, broccoli, carrots, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, all types of potatoes, onions, kale, etc. Great apples of a million types. On the non-veg side, beef, lamb, cheese, chocolate, oysters, cider, honey, bakery items.

Certainly different from summer, but I love root veggies and apples best :)

If you go to massfarmersmarkets.org, you can get on the e-mail list. You'll get an e-mail on Sunday nights during market season that lets you know what will be at market that week. It's very helpful for planning ahead, and it's truly non-invasive/non-annoying.

If you are looking for something to replace twice-daily e-mails from David Plouffe or Michelle Obama, this isn't the e-mail list for you :)

Having just been there hours ago, I can tell you that the Davis Sq. Market doesn't have quince. In fact, the only place I've ever found "local" quince is the Clarkdale Farms out in Greenfield, Ma. Which is way the hell out in the Berkshires. I pick up a couple of pounds every year when I go out for Cider Day, which was this past weekend. I luuuuuurrve quince and am savoring the smell for a few days before I back up a tart this weekend.

I'm willing to bet that a couple of the high-end grocers, like Savenors on Charles, might have quince or take a special order for them.

I think it might be a little early for quince. I've bought them at Whole Foods and Savenor's (the one on Kirkland) in late December and I seem to recall that their season starts around then.

If all else fails, the community garden on Paul Gore Street in Jamaica Plain (around the corner from Stonybrook station on the Orange line) has a quince tree in it (or at least used to), if you happen to know anyone over in that area who might be able to pick some for you. Maybe someone at Spontaneous Celebrations could help you out, since they are around the corner, and are usually involved in that garden. The garden is technically closed to non-garden members, but they might be happy to share their overwhelming supply of quince! :-)
