Dancing

I checked the tags and couldn't find anything on the topic.

Where are some good, close(ish) bars/clubs that have a dance floor, preferably with hip hop/top 40 music. Doesn't have to be fancy, just looking for a place to dance.

Thanks!

There was Club Choices in Union Square, but they got shut down and I don't know if they have reopened yet.

Perhaps Club Night Games at the Somerville Holiday Inn, near Sullivan Square?

In any event, I tagged this "bars and clubs". There may be something of use in the archives.

talk about "doesn't have to be fancy, just looking for a place to dance." doesn't get any less fancy than dancing at a holiday inn.

Unless it's in Sullivan Square. Which it is.

I wouldn't know. I've never been to either of the places I linked to above. My taste in clubs runs more towards Johnny D's or Lizard Lounge.

Speaking of Johnny D's, there are often danceable bands there. I think that's the only place in Davis proper where I've ever gone dancing.

The Precinct in Union probably has dancing most nights.

Not really that I've noticed. I'm off of School and Highland so I usually end up in Union more often than Davis, and the Precinct and the Independent are very similar, that is, nicer pub-style places without really anything in the way of dancing.

But speaking of dancing, there are some places in Union that might be able to provide, and that's not too far from Davis IMO. Now, to the OP, I've never gone here, but the Samba Club may have some dancing. And then there's Razzy's which, if you start dancing on karoke night, I am positive that many others will follow suit.

Funnily enough, I have some friends who LOVE Night Games and go there on Fridays (or was it Saturdays?)

Hong Kong or Red Line in Harvard Square have dance floors and play that type of music. Also, Pheonix Landing in Central. I'm not sure if all of those are too far for you though.

I was going to suggest these ones, plus I think Middlesex and the Enormous Room in Central, if you're counting out that far as close(ish).

HOWEVER, I will say that I've actually never been to any of these! I'm no fan of dancing myself, I just know people who go. :) So you might want to check if they only have dancing on certain nights, what type of music, etc.

I don't think the Enormous Room has a dance floor. But Middlesex definitely does. It's kind of a club-ish atmosphere, if you're into that.

Ah. A friend's ex used to DJ at the Enormous Room, and I assumed it was for dancing... But maybe that was more "here's some music to listen to while you lounge/drink."

The Enormous Room is ... interestingly named, once you actually see the place.

no i've been to the enormous room on a friday/saturday night, there's plenty of dancing going on, it gets real crowded.

A the Enormous Room, the whole place becomes a dance floor.

If you're actually in Davis Square, Diva has a top 40 night on Fridays/Saturdays.

Hong Kong in Harvard Square has dancing on its 3rd floor on Saturday nights.

Phoenix Landing has top 40 nights on Fridays.

None of those are great, in my eyes, but you're not likely to get knifed there.

Diva Lounge is weird. Every time I've gone, it's been completely empty. More bouncers, bartenders, DJs, etc than patrons.

It's really quite strange. It's a total scenester place with no scene.

Avoid Hong Kong at all costs.

Phoenix Landing is fun, but less in a DJ way and more in a "hits off my iPod" way.

I hear Red Line actually has some fun nights; check that one out.

Middlesex and other bars in the Central-ish area have some fun theme nights, so check out their websites.

There's really not a lot in the way of hip-hop clubs in the Boston area. Roxy used to have a good night, but IDK if it's still around.

I've never liked it, but I guess others ... might? IDK, I find that their drinks suck, their music isn't any good, and the service is always deplorable.

Sagra in Davis has this new dance night on Fridays and Saturdays. Phoenix Landing in Central is awesome on Saturdays, Hong Kong is good on the weekends, T T The Bears in Central Square at times, Tequila Rain in Boston, The Roxy in Boston. I go to a lot of gay clubs too, but I don't think that would be up your alley, so to speak, lol.

Yeah, Sagra....a really awesome bar with $2 shots, $1 Bud Lights, and really good music after 10:30

From: [personal profile] ron_newman
Except that Bud Light isn't worth even $.01 .

Tommy Doyles (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tommy-doyles-cambridge) in Harvard Sq. has a pretty large dance floor upstairs. The crowd is certainly on the college/meathead spectrum of things.

I'll throw in another nod for Phoenix Landing. I think it's a lot of fun, precisely *because* it's not techno all the time, and so you're dancing around to songs you actually know. Though yeah, it is a bit like "hits off your ipod" as the other commenter said. But it's anything from 80s to current top 40, which I think makes it even better.

And if you're already in Central, Zuzu's also has music/dancing (though it's been a while, and I've only been once, so I don't know the schedule), but they do a night called "Soulelujah" which is pretty fun if you like Motown.

you could check out shine in kendall square. i went there once w/ a bunch of friends and we had fun dancing. its not the kind of place i'd go to a lot though.

Burren(?)

I wandered into the Burren once on a Friday night and they had a cover band and people dancing in the back. Not sure if that's a regular thing--it's not really my scene :)
