The Boston Village Gamelan and Rinengga Sih Tentrem of Tufts University is pleased to present its winter concert: Daradasih: A Dream Fulfilled.
Showtime is Saturday, November 22, at 8:00 pm. Admission is free to all. The performance is being held in the Distler Performance Hall, "ground" floor of the Tufts Granoff Music Center.
This festival of Southeast Asian music and dance continues on Sunday with music and dance of Cambodia and the Philippines, featuring master musicians of Cambodia along with the Angkor Dance Troupe of Lowell and the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble of San Francisco. The performance is at 3:00 on Sunday the 23rd, also in the Distler, and also free.
I can't vouch for the Sunday show, but as a member of the BVG, I extend our invitation and I hope to see you there!
The Boston Village Gamelan, established in 1979, was one of the first independent gamelan ensembles in America dedicated to the traditional music of Central Java. The ensemble has been mentored by prominent Javanese musicians including I.M. Harjito, Sumarsam and Wakidi Hardjo Martoyo. For more information on the BVG, view the website at: http://bvg.home.comcast.net/
Gamelan at Tufts University consists of both ensemble courses in Javanese music and the residency of the Boston Village Gamelan. Rehearsals are open to the public and new participants are encouraged. We are currently actively looking for new members to join the ensemble. Prior Javanese gamelan experience, while welcomed, is not a prerequisite. If you or anyone you know in the Boston area would be interested in joining, please contact Barry Drummond at barry.drummond@tufts.edu for more information.
(You can also ping Nora Rocket thru LJ, and yes, you can bang a gong and/or get it on, and no, no one's ever made that joke before...)
