Hi All.
When I last lived in Davis (2002-2004) I would get my Christmas Trees at the sale that took place at the corner of Cameron and Mass Ave, which is now condominiums (or something). Does anyone have any recommendations for local tree purchasing? We have a car, but would love to support a local group doing fundraising. I did a few searches on the group and didn't see anything, so I am hoping this will be useful to others as well!
Thanks :)
-Amber

I saw signs dropped off at the place where the bike path connects on Cameron for a Boy Scout tree sale, so perhaps your previous place is still going to be close by?

they do sell trees there on the bike path now, still the boy scouts/sea scouts. we get our tree from them every year.

they just started setting up this weekend, so i'm not sure they are up and selling yet, but I would expect within the next few days they will be!

I feel obliged to point out that the Boy Scouts discriminate against gay people, and encourage you to choose a more worthy recipient of your money.

I feel obliged to add that while I am aware of that, on the individual level of good that boy scouts does for people, i'm okay with supporting this troop.

Tree's it is

You are correct this is about trees- And it is also unfortunate the stance the scouts take. But here in New England similar to political views some Scouting council's have distanced themselves from the National stance towards the 3G's ( God,Gay&Girl's). Nationally Scouting has lost a great amount of funding from the United Way; but here locally some councils have been able to hold onto it because of said differences. It is the individual troops that benefit from any money raised. Where ever you get your tree I hope it stays fresh green for the whole holiday.

i'm not trying to be difficult, but i thought i remembered hearing that the united way also discriminates against gays? is this true? by your comment, it seems like i might have heard wrong...

Your post made me all nostalgic; I used to live on Madison Ave in Cambridge and I'd walk that bikepath into Davis all the time. I knew exactly what and where you were talking about. And I remember when they started building on that lot. Good times, good times. *grateful sniffle for your post*

As for finding Xmas trees in Camberville these days, I've no idea. But I do hope that you are successful. ::hug::

Somerville public school students sell trees at the corner of McGrath and Broadway, on the border of East Somerville. That would be a drive for you but they have decent prices and it's a local cause.

1. I think they fence off some of the grassy area where the bike path meets Cameron and sell the trees there.

2. The Somerville Schools trees at Foss Park go on sale Dec 3

3. We couldn't wait and bought a tree at Ricky's flower market in Union Square. He has a wide selection of sizes as well as types of trees.

Agassiz Preschool, right on Mass. Ave. in Porter Square, has their annual sale from Dec. 5 - 21.

I'd second the Agassiz Preschool Scholarship fundraiser at the white church at Mass. Ave and Roseland. A good cause, and a needy one since the school is scrambling to find a new home (Lesley University is kicking them out of their home in the basement of the church after 40+ years...)

Plus the trees are good quality.

Oh, Lesley is their landlord? I was assuming it was the church.

And there I was thinking I wasn't going to learn anything of interest to me by reading a post about Christmas trees!

The church was sold to Lesley 3+ years ago. Lesley promptly told the school that it needed to get out. After some negotiating Lesley told them they could have some time to find another space, but its almost impossible to find space that works for preschools around here... At some point Lesley will probably run out of patience, since they are planning to move the church building into the open space on the side and build a second building where the church is.

And the church's UCC congregation moved to Medford Hillside, right at the Somerville line, merging with another congregation already located there.

Ok, so I'm stretching with this tag, but maybe Pemberton's?

We get our tree from Pemberton's every year. They have a lovely selection.

In related news, I know that the Somerville Growing Center is selling wreaths, but I'm fairly certain that orders need to be in today and that there aren't trees. You pick 'em up at the craft fair on Saturday in Union. Still, if you're interested, contact the Growing Center:

By telephone: 617-666-2969

Finally, "Hee!"

The first post has links to even older ones from earlier years.

They are all tagged as "holidays", which I think is sufficient (and is how I found last year's posts)

Yep. The tag is for any post related to any holiday - Christmas, Chanukah, New Year, Easter, Passover, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, various solstices and equinoxes, etc.
