I know it's early to be thinking about it, but a couple of days ago the Somerville Journal posted a press release from the city encouraging people to sign up for snow emergency alerts.  I had a question about the city's snow emergency policy.  It says: "When the snow emergency is declared, parking is prohibited on the even side of the street, unless otherwise posted."

So does the odd side only parking apply to all streets in Somerville even if the street is not a snow emergency route, or is odd side only parking for snow emergency routes?

All streets. The theory is that it allows enough space for plows and one row of cars.

If I recall correctly, there's no parking at all on snow emergency routes.

It means just what it says -- unless your street is specially posted otherwise, you can't park on the even side during a snow emergency. I don't think Somerville has any such concept as 'snow emergency routes'.

I think "Snow Emergency Route" is an MBTA thing, not a city thing. I've seen signs for it on Central hill for the 85 bus. It may also be that those are streets where there is no parking at all during a snow emergency, but I don't know.

As best I can tell, the majority of streets in Somerville are marked with signs saying "NO PARKING DURING SNOW EMERGENCY" on one side or the other. I think the Even-Side prohibition just applies to those that aren't marked at all. So look for the sign first, if no sign, stay off the even side.

Oh yes, the 85. If there's a lot of snow, it doesn't have a chance of making that tight turn from Central Street to Avon Street, so it goes up to Highland Ave. instead.

I don't recall ever seeing a "No Parking During Snow Emergency" sign in Somerville. None of the residential streets near me have one.

Here's the simple explanation:
When the city of Somerville declares a snow emergency you can park only on the odd side of the street. The only exception is a street where parking is always prohibited on the odd side of the street. In that case, you may continue to park on the even side. Just get ready to visit the Traffic & Parking Department, since a lot of the PCO's don't seem to be aware of that rule and tend to ticket everyone on those streets!!
