Oh OK, for some reason I had the idea they were fake ice. Don't know why!

me either lol. They had little piles of ice shavings all around them. I think it's very possible that they were carved in situ (which might make more sense than transporting them post-carving). Maybe the guy who lives there is the sculptor.
