My plans for tonight got canceled due to the snow emergency and I was wondering what (if anything) is open in the Davis Square (or within walking distance) such as bars and restaurants etc.  Do the bars typically stay open?

I don't see why anything in Davis would close. A couple posts below yours, the Slutcracker show is going on as scheduled. If it's going on, so will the movies on the other 4 screens.

Johnny D's has live music almost every night, as does Toad in Porter Square.

Actually, live music is one of the most-cancelled sort of things in a snowstorm. It depends a lot on where the band is supposed to be traveling from to the gig. Johnny D's tends to have bands from away, which makes their shows susceptible to snow cancellation. Toad more often has local musicians so is less likely to have to cancel shows for snow.

I am still bitter, 14 years later, that a snowstorm caused the cancellation of a Morphine show I was going to see. This was before I lived in the Boston area, so such things were not happening every day. And then Mark Sandman died.

Despite being a local band, Pressure Cooker is canceled for tonight at Johnny D's. But, that means the bar won't have a cover charge!

I should have listened to you. I ventured out to the Lily Pad to hear 'Alash: Masters of Tuvan Throat Singers', but the band was not able to reach the venue from wherever they were (I heard Connecticut). The show is rescheduled for tomorrow at 2 pm.

That fateful night last December, I trudged up the hill to Rudy's in Teele Square! I can't think of anything better in a snowstorm than tacos and margaritas.

And down in lovely snow I've lain, happy til I froze again
My nose, it was my cold nose yet. By and by, my ass was wet.

Alternately, it requires no argument whatsoever.

I did that one night during a snowstorm a year or two ago, and Rudy's was closed.

It's Massachusetts...nothing closes a bar around here!

Seriously, unless they lose power, they tend to stay open. Personally, I'm making a brisket and watching Hellboy 2.

Aren't bars closed on Election Day? Or is that just liquor stores?

Bars are not closed on Election Day. I don't think liquor stores are, either. People watched and celebrated the election results in bars last month.

Hunh. I could've sworn alcohol sales were prohibited on Election Day. Did they undo that recently or something, along with allowing Sunday sales?

I don't go out drinking much, as you can probably tell.

They are closed in lots of other states on Election Day, which made the 30 minute trip to the county line when I was in college especially frustrating.

Nope, there's always been booze on Election Day in Massachusetts. It's all the other New England states that didn't use to allow it.

My boyfriend works part time at a liquor store and he worked on Election Day. I only remember because it was the day I got back from London and I was annoyed he didn't take the night off.

I don't know why, but this just amused me. :) Thanks for the laugh!

I'm glad, you are welcome! :-)

I ended up watching "White Christmas", which seemed to go with Brisket a bit better. Brisket was good though.

The new restaurant on Broadway, Bread & Co, is open (and doing well today--bought a cheese pastel on my way home). They are not right in Davis, but they are on the 89 which stops at Powderhouse Square when it doesn't leave straight from Davis (it's about 1 1/2 miles from Powderhouse, towards Sullivan Square).

In my experience most stores & restaurants stay open unless the governor declares a snow emergency.

Individual ones might close if they have staffing issues, though.

I've seen local bars happily open in conditions far worse than this. Come the apocalypse, there will still be drinks for one and all.
