I have been cat-sitting for a friend's cats for the past few months. I can't keep them at my house any longer. My friend can't take them. He'd hoped to be able to after an anticipated move, and it seems like that's not going to work out. So they need a new home.
The cats:
- are littermates who have never been separated
- are 9 years old
- are both fixed and up to date on all shots and medical care
- have always been indoor-only cats
- pee on things they are not authorized to pee on
- are otherwise extremely healthy, affectionate, sweet-tempered animals
Here's my best understanding of what these cats need in order to be good citizens of a household:
- an adult who is home most of the time (ie; is retired, or works at home)
- no other pets
- no small, disruptive people
- a very regular schedule and quiet home life
- fairly meticulous housekeeping (you cannot be the type of person who leaves piles of laundry on the floor; they will pee on it)
They had a situation like this in the past, when they lived with a tidy grad student couple, and apparently did not have problems with peeing, unless something went wildly off with the situation, like their humans were traveling or they moved.
Ideally, they could go to a home like the one described above. Failing that, I would be very happy to find a 'barn cat' situation for them at a farm or cohousing community or the like, where they can pee in the great outdoors as much as they like and can learn to enjoy fresh air. I'm also working at getting them on the wait-list for no-kill shelters in the area.
Are there other good cat options I am forgetting? These guys are really sweet, and I regret not being able to keep them. They'd make great pets for someone with a less chaotic home. Please let me know if you have a lead on a possible home for them.
