Temporary Parking?
Jan. 2nd, 2009 12:24 pmHey everybody, I looked through some of the old parking posts and couldn't quite find what I was looking for, so I'll just ask. :)
I'm moving up to Somerville next weekend from out of state, and bringing my car. I'm going to get in late Saturday, which means it's going to be a couple days at least before I can get my car licensed, insured, and all that good stuff... but our apartment is on a permit-only street. My roomie's already got a permit, since she lives up there now, but isn't sure wtf I should do.
I checked the Somerville website and was going to call but they're closed for the day, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's some kind of permit I could get for a week (I know there's visitor permits, but those are 2-day only, right?). Also, they want proof of residence but won't accept a lease... does that mean my roomie needs to sign up for utilities in my name so I can get some kind of paper trail?

Date: 2009-01-02 06:48 pm (UTC)Have your roommie go in and get a couple of the green temp. permits you can get for a party and you are good for another day as well.
Monday go to the DMV and start the process to get your in state license. You will need three proofs for that. Old license is proof of picture, SSN card is proof of signature and birth cert is proof if citizenship. If you have a passport you can use it as one instead. If you do be prepared to handle the no SSN card no service crap that I had to go through. Never mind the fact that it is against federal law to use it as a form of id. If something goes wrong you still have Tues to fix it.
Have fun transferring your car over. They tried to make me pay taxes on my over 4 year old car as if it were new since they do not recognize duplicate titles (if you ever financed the car and the bank lost the title you get a dup one)
Lease is just fine for proof, none of the utilities are in my name so I brought that, my drivers license with my new address on it and a piece of mail.

Date: 2009-01-02 07:00 pm (UTC)Yeah the registration is a bit confusing (they also don't have the form up on the RMV site that I can find). I'll need insurance beforehand, but do I need to get it inspected beforehand also?
Awesome, glad to know
Thanks!

Date: 2009-01-02 09:30 pm (UTC)Incidentally, the reason we got kicked out of the RMV was first for lack of proof of residence, second time for proof of signature/date of birth and for the third guy? They didn't take his two-month old utility bill. Be careful with what you bring. ;)

Date: 2009-01-03 05:46 am (UTC)As for proof of residence, I'm pretty sure that I was able to show a checkbook with the Somerville address printed on it, or something along that line.
