So I was passing the Goodwill this morning on the 96 bus, and there was definately a fire truck and some medics and they were covering a dead body up in the crosswalk...Was I seeing things?  Does anybody know what happened?!

Is that your "helpful" hat you're wearing?

Actually, I'm guessing that would be the "stickler for correct spelling" hat.

Maybe related? Although the time listed in this article is different:

And the incident in that article took place all the way on the other side of Somerville. ;)

Rocking ankylosaurus icon! That was my favorite dinosaur when I was a wee little one.

I was in the Goodwill when the accident happened, and when I walked out a few minutes after, I saw some emergency personnel (there were a couple cop cars plus a fire truck on hand) kneeling next to the man who'd been hit, but he wasn't covered up. Ambulance showed up 5-10 minutes later while I was in another shop, and when I walked back past the scene shortly thereafter, they were loading the guy into the ambulance, but he still wasn't covered, looked like just whatever he'd been wearing. I hope he wasn't killed, but he certainly wasn't moving that I could see (not that I hung out to watch, but still).

It makes sense they would cover him up somewhat, what with it being so cold if they couldn't move him right away.

I was getting some DD this morning during the time of the accident. A man was hit crossing the street by the Goodwill. I was chatting with a woman in the subway after. She said thought she recognized him as one of the homeless men. I don't know anything about his condition.

Something about that crosswalk seems really dangerous to me, and I can't exactly figure out what. Maybe it's the fact that they allow parking immediately upstream, or maybe it's just the various accidents I've heard about over the years.

Is the city planning to do anything to make it safer?

As a pedestrian, I find that to be the most dangerous intersection. There is not much oncoming car traffic to impede cars from taking a left from Elm onto Grove.

If Grove were a one-way street going towards Elm, I think it would decrease, at least a little bit, the danger to pedestrians. Outside of that, at least put a stop sign. (A traffic light there would be too much, though.)

Cutter and Highland (by Kick Ass / Pigs Fly) is pretty dangerous too.

One thing I like about this area is that unsignallized crosswalks usually work well. In other parts of the country, there's never a crosswalk unless there's also a stop sign or traffic light.

A stop sign would waste a heck of a lot of gas, and wouldn't necessarily make things safer. A traffic light would waste a lot of time for both drivers and pedestrians.

I'd like the city to get a traffic engineer to figure out why (or if) this particular crosswalk is so much more dangerous than other similar ones in the area.
