Last week there were quite a few Verizon trucks out and about in the Teele Square area after a number of people lost their phone service... I lost mine the cold night after the early morning power outage (12/29), it came back on New Years Eve. And whatever happened, they were stringing new cables, etc.

Anyway happened to check Verizon's "see if broadband is available on your line" page, and can now get DSL after it being an impossibility the last ten times I've checked. Perhaps it's the same for the rest of us who were on a DLC ( not direct line to the central office ).

I'm guessing whatever happened last week, they upgraded to DSL-capable line cards in the affected area.

A Verizon guy came by my place in Malden to advise us that we now have fiber optic access....

It's a busy time for Verizon, I guess!

Fiber to the premises? I doubt it...

NSTAR had an undervoltage for a few days after the power outage
in the Teele Square to Davis Square area. I called them on New Years Eve
and they fixed it. Perhaps some Verizon equipment was unhappy only getting
107V in the evenings? (It's supposed to stay above 113V.) Unlikely,
but the time-frames match up.

I keep getting calls from Vz about DSL (aka "High Speed Internet". I basically yelled at the last guy to call me and told them to take me off their list until they could sell me FIOS. I get at least one call every week or two from them trying to push their DSL on me.

It would be great if we could get FIOS in Somerville, but I just don't see Vz doing it here. :( One reason I heard is that they really want to sell TV, and we already have two cable providers.

The mayor says that the reason we don't have FIOS is that they want to wire the upscale parts of Somerville and ignore the less upscale parts. The mayor says, "no dice," and he can keep on saying it until Verizon caves, as far as I'm concerned.

I would not be surprised if....

As they try to push FIOS, DSL service in the area became more and more unreliable, just as a strange coincidence.

Yup, Verizon is pushing FIOS.

That way, people can watch movies online. What else is it good for (unless you are a scientist who wants to do lots of interactive image processing on remote machines)?
