Bagels?

Anyone have a recommended place for getting tasty bagels in the area?

Many thanks!

Edit: Wow, thank you all for your suggestions, humorous and serious alike! (What a great lj community!) My boyfriend and I ended up stopping at Magnificent Muffins to give them a try (thanks also to closetalker who mentioned their 12pm closing time!). This'll definitely make a great reference for us and our bagel wants/needs. :) (I've never tried bagels in Montreal before, though if I ever find myself there again, I certainly will!)

Thank God you didn't ask for burritos.

I'm sure other places sell bagels, but the only two I can think of are proud local businesses Au Bon Pain and Dunky's. Maybe Starbucks.

Too bad there's no Bagel Rising in the Davis area. Best bagels ever ever ever.

there's also Bruegger's Bagels in Porter Square, but I think the OP is looking for a non-chain.

Does Diesel sell bagels? I assume so but I've no actual idea.

Well, like all hippies in business, eventually they will sell out and become enormous fat-cat monsters.

Davis Square MBTA stop. You take the Red Line inbound to South Station, catch an Amtrak train to New York...basically the same thing you would do if you wanted some good pizza.

Seriously, Bruegger's in Porter is your closest option if you need a bag of bagels. If you head up Mass Ave to Arlington, Bagels By Us imports H&H bagels from New York.

I'm not a bagel eater...but I checked Yelp and they have a page of places that sell or serve bagels. Maybe others can opine on non-chain places like the Magnificent Muffin and Bagel Shop in Teele Square, Johnny D's, Diesel, Broken Yolk, True Grounds, Kelly's Diner, Cafe Rossini or Blue Shirt?

catch an Amtrak train to New York

I was wondering how long it would take before someone gave that answer. 21 minutes.

What's a Santa Monica sandwich? I'm curious because I used to live in that city.

It's a bagel with cream cheese, smoked salmon, and avocado spread. I get it on a sun-dried tomato bagel with light veggie cream cheese and added cucumbers.

I think Magnificent Muffin in Teele has bagels, but they close at noon, so hurry! :)

Neighborhood, I think.

Can't remember the name, but there's a bagel store in Teele Square that's amazing. Right off Broadway, heading toward Sullivan. Open from 6am-3pm or so.

They do, but they're nothing special.

Or... take the Red Line to the Silver Line to Logan. Buy ticket at Air Canada counter. Get on plane to Montreal. Take taxi or the 80 bus to St. Viateur Bagel (two locations on St. Viateur near Park Ave.). Buy a dozen bagels, some black (sesame) and some white (poppy) and a tub of Liberty brand cream cheese. Eat one bagel hot in the car on the way to your destination. Eat the rest with the cream cheese when you get there.

I'm a bagel fanatic and don't eat them outside New York (where I'm from) or Montreal (where my family is from). I have never found the imported H&H bagels to be as good as real H&H. Something is screwed up on the trip from 80th and Broadway. My real favorite New York bagel place was Columbia Hot Bagels at 110th and Broadway, which is no longer there. My other favorite is a place in a strip mall off the LIE in Little Neck.

Glad to be of service.

My wife (who grew up in Massachusetts) didn't believe me about NY bagels until she tried one. Now, whenever we go visit my family, she insists that we stop and pick up bagels on the way home.

I love Montreal, but it never occurred to me to get bagels there. I'll have to try this next time.

Totally agreed about imported H&H not being as good as the real thing. I do like them better than Bruegger's, but not enough to get them very often.
