Bagels?

Anyone have a recommended place for getting tasty bagels in the area?

Many thanks!

Edit: Wow, thank you all for your suggestions, humorous and serious alike! (What a great lj community!) My boyfriend and I ended up stopping at Magnificent Muffins to give them a try (thanks also to closetalker who mentioned their 12pm closing time!). This'll definitely make a great reference for us and our bagel wants/needs. :) (I've never tried bagels in Montreal before, though if I ever find myself there again, I certainly will!)

Thank God you didn't ask for burritos.

I'm sure other places sell bagels, but the only two I can think of are proud local businesses Au Bon Pain and Dunky's. Maybe Starbucks.

there's also Bruegger's Bagels in Porter Square, but I think the OP is looking for a non-chain.

Davis Square MBTA stop. You take the Red Line inbound to South Station, catch an Amtrak train to New York...basically the same thing you would do if you wanted some good pizza.

Seriously, Bruegger's in Porter is your closest option if you need a bag of bagels. If you head up Mass Ave to Arlington, Bagels By Us imports H&H bagels from New York.

I'm not a bagel eater...but I checked Yelp and they have a page of places that sell or serve bagels. Maybe others can opine on non-chain places like the Magnificent Muffin and Bagel Shop in Teele Square, Johnny D's, Diesel, Broken Yolk, True Grounds, Kelly's Diner, Cafe Rossini or Blue Shirt?

Date: 2009-01-07 04:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ukelele.livejournal.com
I am not a bagel snob and have not experienced the Legendary New York Bagel, so my comments are clearly unimportant. That said, the True Grounds bagel makes an excellent vehicle for egg and cheese, or for smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers, but I have never particularly noticed it on its own, so I suspect it is not on a par with the LNYB.

Do not eat bagels from Magnificent Muffin! They make some good things (egg sandwiches, mmm), but bagels aren't one of them. Au Bon Pain is better, and that's saying a lot.

I have... bagel issues. as in I have very stringent definitions of what actually constitutes a bagel. (anything at starbucks, or Dunkies? not a bagel. The fruity, sweet things at Panera, very tasty, but not a bagel)

I've been looking for decent bagels since I moved here. Everyone tells me to go to Brighton, or Newton, but I haven't made it there yet.

Au Bon Pain: fluffy balls of dough.
Magnificent Muffin: Meh
Haven't Tried Diesel, but not optimistic. (Good scones though)
Brueggers: Good bagels, but always closed when I get there.
Shaws: not bagels.
Bagels By Us: (which oddly ISN'T by them, as they import them from H&H) not bad, but not fresh.

I seriously need a food icon. How can I be the only person without a food icon?

Date: 2009-01-07 04:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arrowintwolakes.livejournal.com
I have an icon of a martini destroying Nazism, but I don't think that counts as "food."

Whole foods sells a variety of other people's bagels. IIRC, Bagel King, Iggy's, and like one or two other brands. I once went in there and bought a dozen with like 2-3 from each brand to do a taste test, but forgot to write down which was which...

I tend to agree with the "head to NY and bring back a couple dozen" sentiment. You can go to Montreal too although it's a different kind of bagel. That said, Iggy's (near Alewife in Cambridge) has acceptable bagels which are somewhere between NY and Montreal. They're only good when fresh, so don't bother getting them at the supermarket or whatever.

I will 2nd this vote for Iggy's. They make a mean bagel in my estimation of things. And in non-bagel, but still a small bready thing their cranberry nut rolls are awesome (and vegan).

Another vote for Magnificent Muffin

From: [identity profile] teele-sq.livejournal.com
Their bagels may not be the best in the world, but they're the best in the Davis Square area in my opinion. They don't cook the bagels on the premises, they actually import them from a bakery in New York.

They also spread copious amounts of cream cheese on for you. I hate places that just toast the bagel and then hand me a small container of cream cheese and a plastic knife.

I am still amazed that the entire City of Somerville - full o'us jews - has not a single bagel place that actually cooks its own bagels on-site. Amazing. Magnificent Muffin is OK but they don't make them there.

I know, right? This has been bugging me for the last 7 years.

So far I haven't done any better than, "Go to South Station and catch the next bus to Providence. Walk up College Hill to Bagel Gourmet. Re-live your college days (or, y'know, my college days) with a delicious bagel." Hey, it's closer than New York!

Bagel Taste Test Winners

From: [identity profile] dashford.livejournal.com
I and a bunch of friends had a taste test about a year ago of various "local" choices -- plain bagels with cream cheese. Among them were Iggy's, Bagels by US, Brueggers, and others. (It was on a Saturday so Kupel's weren't included because they were closed.) The winners were Katz's in Chelsea and Rosenfeld's in Newton. Not close to Davis Sq., but it's nice to go out early Saturday and get some still-warm bagels...
