Calling Valleywag "genuine cause for concern" is a little like cancelling your trip to Yellowstone for fear of Bigfoot because of an article in the Weekly World News.
Valleywag is a schadenfreude rag, however, and anything Nick Denton doesn't like (including *any kind* of "new media" that isn't dedicated to his own personal glory) is his favorite target.
LJ has confirmed that they have laid off 12 of 28 employees, though, including I believe all of the US design and programming staff. So I'll stand on "genuine cause for concern".
how much actual design and development does LJ need to survive? Zero. A LAMP site like this can survive by paying the power and bandwidth bills, maybe with a whole two unix admins (who, by the way, are still very much employed) quite handily for quite some time.
C-Net confirms the layoffs, not the numbers (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10132684-36.html).
It should also be kept in mind that lj's been through this sort of thing (and worse) before.
Although one of the guys laid-off has a name pretty close to Beardo, which sounds suspiciously like a Russian supervillain. Perhaps this was a move not instigated by global economic troubles but really a secret manuever by, for instance, the Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I hope not, but a few minutes ago, it was very sick, and then displayed this message:
LiveJournal.com is currently unavailable due to emergency maintenance. Don't
worry, this has nothing to do with our recent company layoffs! It's a technical
problem, not a lack-of-personnel problem.
note they are *not* trying to sweep this under the rug, so at least kudos for knowing information flows. I've seen multinational corps not meet things heads on:

One of the laid-off people seems to be involved with a possible LJ-replacement project called Dreamwidth.
