Calling Valleywag "genuine cause for concern" is a little like cancelling your trip to Yellowstone for fear of Bigfoot because of an article in the Weekly World News.
C-Net confirms the layoffs, not the numbers (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10132684-36.html).
It should also be kept in mind that lj's been through this sort of thing (and worse) before.
Although one of the guys laid-off has a name pretty close to Beardo, which sounds suspiciously like a Russian supervillain. Perhaps this was a move not instigated by global economic troubles but really a secret manuever by, for instance, the Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Ooh, I've heard of that... that's that thing on the other side of my window where all the people are honking their car horns, right? The one with the trees and stuff.
note they are *not* trying to sweep this under the rug, so at least kudos for knowing information flows. I've seen multinational corps not meet things heads on:
"LiveJournal.com is currently unavailable due to emergency maintenance. Don't worry, this has nothing to do with our recent company layoffs! It's a technical problem, not a lack-of-personnel problem.
Facebook seemed like the logical choice to me too - or yahoo groups as a distant second. People expect to find communities like this on the large public sites. I would suspect if the site branched out on to a private server it will keep its core member group but miss out on all the one off people stumbling in.
On the plus side, maybe the alleged LJ-replacer will have a "search previous entries" function. Or does LJ already have that and I'm too dense to find it? If that's the case, then I will probably just wither away into nothingness.
Before they redesigned the Profile page to its new, suckier, layout, there was a very small icon shaped like a magnifying glass that you could click on to search a journal - it hung out right by the "watch this/join this" buttons. Very useful. No longer anywhere that I can see :(
I personally highly doubt LJ will let itself completely die. If it can no longer be a for-profit company (which I don't think is very likely to begin with) then it'd probably allow all of the content to be available to an open-source project based on the LJ code, so LJ could migrate there.

One of the laid-off people seems to be involved with a possible LJ-replacement project called Dreamwidth.
