Facebook seemed like the logical choice to me too - or yahoo groups as a distant second. People expect to find communities like this on the large public sites. I would suspect if the site branched out on to a private server it will keep its core member group but miss out on all the one off people stumbling in.
LiveJournal makes it easier to set up groups of the “friends” you actually care about and read just those when you have less time.
More to the point, on LJ, to be annoyed by your “friends” they actually have to make a post. On Facebook, they can be playing some dumb-ass web game that spams you with every detail in the life of their vampire elf, or making dumb comments on photos taken by someone you wouldn't know from Adam and/or Eve, or....
You can turn the volume knob down on individual spammy Facebook "friends" by clicking the nigh-invisible "customize news feed" link at the bottom of your news feed. I find this very useful.
(Ha ha, this is one of the giddiest wandering-around d_s posts I have enjoyed in a while. The weather is crap, and people are vaguely nervous.)
Is there something I'm missing about how Facebook groups operate? Some box I maybe forgot to check? Because it seems to me one of the biggest differences between Facebook and LJ is how the groups work; it's really easy on LJ for me to see which groups have new content and what it is -- in fact it takes work to avoid knowing that -- whereas Facebook doesn't seem to have any way of making that easy.
Well, that and I'm not using my real name on LJ, of course. Which is also a big deal.
