The City of Somerville has lifted its snow emergency as of 11 a.m., Sunday, January 11, 2009. Residents parked in municipal or school lots during the snow emergency have a two-hour window in which to move their vehicles once the emergency has been lifted.  Cars still parked in city lots at 1 p.m. on Sunday may be subject to ticketing and towing.    Residents, landlords and business owners are required by city regulations to shovel their sidewalks but may not shovel snow into the street.

For more information, please dial 311 (627-666-3311 from outside Somerville) or visit the city’s website, www.somervillema.gov.

Well, the cars have to be towed before too much snow falls, so the order to tow went out with the thinking that we were going to get the snowstorm of doom.

Is there any particular reason that cars are towed during snow storms in the first place? It's not as if the city couldn't find snow plows that are a normal car width.

Yes, so that a wider section of the street can be plowed.

so that only one side of the street has people's piles of snow that they can't be bothered to move into a yard or otherwise get rid of when they dig out their ca, instead of two sides.

Stupid, yet serious question, not meant to be argumentative -

There are a number of houses in my neighborhood that do not have front yards - the house directly abuts the sidewalk.

Where should people put the snow they displace from clearing the sidewalk, and from clearing out a parking spot?

I know the official answer - NOT ON THE STREET.
I'm not sure there's a right answer.
