Dear friends of the arts in Somerville:

As many of you know, Theatre @ First, Somerville's only community theatre company, and the Post-Meridian Radio Players, who bring you brilliant live radio drama from past and present, have both often rehearsed and performed at the Unity Church of God on College Ave, just outside of Davis Square. They housed PMRP for 2008's Tomes of Terror, provided rehearsal space for T@F's Much Ado About Nothing and PMRP's triumphant First Night and Arisia performances, and will be the performance venue for 2009's The Winter's Tale and Festival @ First.

Unity has been incredibly generous and accommodating with us, and we love working in their space. Unfortunately, the recent rough weather has caused a major pipe burst in the building, which has made part of the building unusable.

Unity was already in somewhat dire financial straits before this occurred, and was on a campaign to replace their roof. These new very necessary repairs will cost thousands of dollars, and they can't see their way to affording it anytime soon.

It's time for us to step up and give back to the people who have made it possible for us to bring you great live theatre and radio time and time again. We're starting a fundraising campaign online, and every little bit helps. If you can give $5, or $10, or even $1 (larger amounts are, of course, very welcome!), we can help Unity work toward restoring its full operations.

Go to www.paypal.com and send any amount you can to theatreatfirst@gmail.com . EDIT: If you can, use your bank account to send money through Paypal. It avoids fees and makes sure that all of your money goes to the desired place! Tell your friends who've seen our shows to go there too.

You can also mail a check directly to:

Unity Church of God
6 William Street
Somerville, MA 02144

Spread the word throughout your online communities, and help Theatre @ First and PMRP help Unity Church, the place that, more and more, makes it all possible!

Thanks for your continued support,
Theatre @ First and PMRP

Does Unity have any insurance on the building?

You need flood insurance, usually, to cover burst pipes. Standard building insurance does not cover it. (And, probably, the new roof is simply wear and tear, rather than an insurance incident.)

(Caveat: I have no personal knowledge of the situation.)

Is theater@first getting paypal to waive transaction fees? if not, I'd rather send a check.

There are no transaction fees for personal accounts. The drawback is that personal accounts can't receive money from credit cards (except for up to $100/year IIRC).

It looks like you can donate to their roof fund from their website as well.
