Permit parking is not in effect on Sundays and legal holidays. I don't know of any other time restrictions, unless they are explicitly displayed on street signs. (Some places have permit parking only overnight. or at other specified times.)
I've seen those vultures out as late as 2am. And it's not just resident permits they're after, it's too close to hydrant, too close to corner, not close enough to curb, and whatever else they can slap on you.
Parking enforcement in Somerville is a well oiled machine, never turn your back on them.

It's true. Once my boyfriend got a ticket for parking without a permit -- he had parked on the street for about 5 minutes to drop me off at my apartment and help me carry some stuff inside. He got back to the car before the traffic and parking officer had actually written the ticket and said, "I'm leaving now, I was just dropping someone off." She let him go. Later, he got a LATE FEE in the mail for the ticket that he was never actually issued. When he went to the traffic and parking office to contest it, he pointed out that there was no way for him to not be late in paying a ticket if he was unaware that he'd gotten a ticket in the first place, but they didn't care.
i've lived here for a year, and in that time i've made every effort to abide by the parking rules. for my efforts i've gotten close to $500 in tickets for parking too close to the corner, too close to a hydrant, etc., etc., in situations where you'd literally have to get out a measuring tape to tell. i believe the point is in somerville they give NO benefit of the doubt. zero.
i think i recall hitler saying something about plans which were meant to "benefit the general populace." i'll take authority with a heart over x additional dollars per month in the city coffers any day.
I'll apologize for the moron comment, and rephrase it.
I think likening the actions of traffic and parking to evil dictators, or to fascism in general, is a poorly constructed argument that dishonors the memories of those who have been victims of evil dictators, or fascism in general.
well, with all due respect to the moderator and the civility that was requested, i stand by my comment. (okay, the first comment. the fascist thing was maybe a tad snarky.)
i wasn't comparing the somerville parking authorities with hitler. i *was* comparing the phrase "to benefit the general populace" with statements a despot would make.
by definition, everything that a democratic government and its agencies do is for the benefit of the general populace ... or it should be. but saying, in essence, "it's for your own good" doesn't thoughtfully address the question or the comments that followed. it merely stifles discussion of the issue itself ... what are the pros and cons of having a parking office that has zero tolerance for human error and the organizational infrastructure of general patton?
"the populace" has the right to comment on what is to its benefit and what's not. my original comment made clear that that was precisely the spirit in which i spoke. i--and my wallet--would prefer a parking office that recognizes good-faith efforts to obey parking regulations.
Heh, don't listen to the politically correct police. I think you made your point effectively. You expressed you anger and frustration with hyperbolic language. Totally acceptable for me. Anybody understood what you meant.
Got a ticket on one of the one way streets off Holland at 11:00 PM for being within 20 feet of the corner.
A snow emergency message had a reminder about no parking within 20 feet of corners and i assumed that meant only during snow emergenies, all other times it would be the standard 2' like with driveways. I also whish they would mark that off, I always see "No Parking here to corner" signs, but not one where I parked, it was a bit misleading. But then checked online and its a rule in effect all the time. Somerville has a parking rules pamphlet if you search the site.

Perhaps a stupid question, but in the past few weeks I've run into this several times, it's now fixed in Davis as they've removed the snow.

That being said, i think the city SHOULD mark the corner zones and the hydrant and the driveway zones ...
