I've been getting notices from NSTAR, saying that they have to replace my gas meter because it's a bit old. But there does not seem to be a penalty for not doing so. I wonder if old meters are likely to over- or underestimate gas usage. Has anyone else received any of these notices?

I don't think they charged me anything when I did this. So I'd say, go ahead and replace it if there's no charge for it.

I got one of those notices last year and ignored it. Nothing bad happened so far.

i think they're trying to upgrade them all to ones that can be read remotely from a truck on the street? this is what they did with my electric meter in Malden.

That's what they're doing for water meters, but when they replaced my gas meters, they just swapped them out with different ones (that didn't appear to be 'new' they didn't even match) that have been inspected recently.

they are supposedly required by law to have them changed out every five or so years. The problem is, they give you a 5 hour window and then don't tend to show up in it. It took me four tries to actually get it installed, as I was so tired of getting the robocalls. They did give me a credit the second time they blew me off, but waiting around on a nice saturday morning for them (between 8-1) and them not coming until long after I'd left the house at 2 was no fun.

you'd think they could use, I don='t know, modern technology or something, to give you more specifics, since there's no direct benefit to you for not getting it done.

when they did finally come, it was like 10 minutes, though.

Lets put it this way, if you do not do it and there is ever a problem (your house catches fire or some such) your insurance company can deny coverage. Just get it done.

It's required by the state that the meters not be older than a certain age.

I don't know why.

I got them replaced when they requested it to me, but next time I'm going to wait and do all three in the house at the same time.

I've set up a time to have all three in our house exchanged at the same time, but you wouldn't believe how difficult it was for NStar to find all three accounts on their computer and set up the exchange for all three at the same day and time.

The person on the phone was nice enough about it, but for some reason NStar doesn't seem to understand that multi-family houses exist. I don't know what they do for apartment complexes. Does every tenant set up a different time for the gas company to come out?

They have to replace them. It costs you nothing. If you leave a very old gas meter in place, possible problems that might develop include inaccurate readings, or gas leaks. No need for a hurry, but find some time and have them do it.

You might want to reference what happens in this post as to what happens if you ignore their requests to replace the meter:
