We were broken into on Francesca Ave. Screen was cut and window forced open. 2 laptops, ipod and camcorder were stolen. We are still looking for anything else missing.

The break in happened between 2:30 and 5:00 pm. We are very surprised as our 80 pound dog was at home, and the radio was on upstairs. I usually work from home but was at a client meeting this afternoon.

This is somebody who knows your place.

Have you had any work done at your place, lately? I'm paranoid about having people do work in my house. We have a ton of expensive equipment and I always make sure I close all doors so that nothing is visible when workers come. I worry that somebody might tell a shady friend or two that there is a lot of "stuff" in this house...

I'm very sorry to hear this. I hope there was no data of value lost on the laptops since you work from home?

(and I think I might know you..though the dog, and house location might be coincidence...)

Do you have a little girl? And I'm glad you had everything backed up. Not trying to be weird, just trying to see if I'm right..

I think I sat next to you on a plane ride once. I'm the knitter with friends who play music behind your house :)

I'm sorry to hear this, and echo [livejournal.com profile] geekpixie in hoping your laptops didn't have any unique data.

I'm pretty sure I heard about another break-in on that same block (the same end of the block, even) last winter. As a neighbor, I find this worrisome.

In light of all the break-ins and thefts, maybe it's time to start, or the revitalize some Neighborhood Crime Watches?

There was such a meeting in my neighborhood last year. But nothing came of it that I can tell...

on the contrary! :)

there's a crime and safety group serving the greater Davis Square area that's been around since the summer of 2007. we haven't had a meeting in a while, but you're welcome to join the mailing list by sending email to watch-subscribe@vecna.org (mailto:watch-subscribe@vecna.org).

in the past we've met with Chief Holloway to talk about the City's new community policing plans, heard presentations from Somerville PD about burglary and car break-in prevention, and seen ResiStat presentations about how much crime really occurs around Davis Square, where specifically, and of what sort.

we're currently trying to work with the Somerville Dog Owners Group (http://www.somdog.org) in order to help dog owners and local business owners work together to address public safety issues. if you'd be interested in working on this project, or just learning a bit more about what's going on, please come to this evening's DARBI meeting, 7 pm at Green Tomato II (former site of Boloco).

to the OP: i'm sorry to hear about your break-in :( it seems to fit the standard template of residential burglaries; i hope you have reported it to Somerville PD.

Does the group have a web page for greater visibility?

Just a note about your dogs' behavior. I have a terrier who is absolutely insane (as are most terriers). She goes berserk when family members, who live there, come into the house! We have learned, however, that she does NOT bark if noone is at home. She apparently is only interested in protecting the family, and not the 'things'. So, if this is common dog behavior that might explain someone coming in without your dog making a fuss.

I'm curious if your things were out or if the robber dug through your stuff looking for them. I'm just wondering if there is any point to tucking things away during the day or not.
