how fun is your date? going on a saturday afternoon to wander in the public gardens, ride the swan boats, and then have dinner in boston makes a NICE date.
My two best friends had a very successful first date at the Public Gardens (though they didn't have dinner in Boston -- we all had it later at John Harvard's), so I agree with bluepapercup. I third the aquarium idea, too.
Depending on your interests, the MIT Museum (http://web.mit.edu/museum/) is pretty cool -- even if you don't care about the robots, they have some genuinely cool holograms and mechanical sculptures that you don't have to be a geek to appreciate. It's also very cheap for students. Then you could eat at the Miracle of Science.
I recently dropped into Antonia's, the little Italian restaurant next to JP Licks in the square. I'd never even noticed it before. I'd have to heartily recommend it for a date, whether it be the 1st or the 101st.
Nice atmosphere, fantastic food, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. We'll be going back soon, I bet.
For the classic dinner and a movie... I had a very nice time at Ten Tables in JP. It is super cozey, albeit far away. Other datey restaurants I can recommend are Dali's (super sensuous), The Enourmous room (which everyone agrees is good for a third date, cause it's a little forward, what with the pillows on the floor), and Central Kitchen (which has an excellent wine list at bargain prices. only a few dollars up from retail.) But being the big dork that I am, I appreciate films at the HFA, the Brattle, or the Coolidge. (godzilla, samuri, blacksploitation, Japanese from the 40s...) But the best date I ever went on was to a taping of Wheel of Fortune in DC.
actually, i just visited de cordova today and found out they just started charging admission to the park and museum as a whole last week. you drive up and there's a new building (as modern/deco as many of the sculptures) and you pay the $6 museum price to get you into the park and museum as a whole. i'm wondering if someone just walking up the driveway would have to pay. the cars are pretty much forced to.
oh wow. that's a bummer. i'm sure i'll still go, but what a bummer. i'll get to see the inside of the museum, finally. :) i may try walking up/biking up, and see if they still charge the fee. thanks for the update!
sherman cafe in union sq... cute laid back, decent first date material for afternoon chatting and the possibility of hanging out more and going somewhere else in the evening... burdick's in harvard sq. decadent choc., decent coffee
