What is the Time Trade Circle?

The Time Trade Circle is a grass-roots, community-based group whose members exchange services. The Time Trade Circle lets us share our own skills and get help from others who offer things we need. When you spend an hour helping another member, one hour is credited to your account. You can spend your hours getting services from other members. The Time Trade Circle's mission is to create and strengthen informal support systems in the community.

To join, you attend an orientation and sign up (no fees).

I agree ... but it needs tagging, and I can't come up with any.

I am so glad to see this announcement. Had been envious that Cambridge had one and Somerville didn't.

If you have a problem being in the room with people who are not wearing perfume, maybe you shouldn't go. Lots of soaps are unscented, or rinse off thoroughly. Many perfumes give me migraines, and I really appreciate groups that try to accommodate that kind of problem.

The actual number of scent allergies is grossly overstated and is as much hypochondria as anything else.
From: [identity profile] hrafn.livejournal.com
Even people who don't have severe reactions to strong scents are still very much put off by being stuck near someone who is drenched in strong "nice" smelling stuff.
From: [identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com
There is a big difference between somebody who is "drenched" and somebody who wears "scented personal products". How about those who wear bright and mismatched colors that deeply hurt one's sense of aesthetics?

You can't close your nose to avoid scents, but you can avert your eyes from poor clothing choices.

The actual number of scent allergies is grossly overstated and is as much hypochondria as anything else.

That actual number of people with scent allergies hardly matters when dealing with an individual who has one. The question is whether to actively welcome them, be indifferent (saying "people will use whatever scents they like, you have to take your chances"), or go out of your way to be insulting. It's reasonably common to be insulting about invisible disabilities. "If you say my perfume makes you sick, you're probably lying about it. Or maybe just too stupid to know your own body." Saying we're only probably lying, rather than just lying ("grossly overstated" rather than "invented") doesn't make it much less insulting.

My problem with perfume is not technically an allergy, it's a migraine trigger. I still go out of my way to avoid it. As I said above, I appreciate groups that try to welcome people with chemical sensitivities. Part of that is because they're welcoming me personally, of course. Another part is that I can see they are being courteous and welcoming as a general thing. I also think it's good that the Time Trade meeting space is wheelchair accessible. I expect there are only a few Time Traders who use wheelchairs, and I (who have no trouble walking) would never dream of challenging whether they really need to use them. I'm glad the Time Trade Circle is trying to build such a welcoming community. I can see it troubles some people, just as some people are troubled by noticeably gender-inclusive language, but I don't especially want to be in community with people like that.

So, it looks like you may be the only reason why people in the room cannot use perfume. If so, the simplest solution for the majority would be for YOU not to go to this meeting.

Also, I hope that there won't be any ugly-looking people because ugly-looking people give me a migraine.

seriously, what on earth is your problem? I assume you think you're being funny, but you're not. You have developed a consistent pattern of making snide or insulting or just plain pointless comments on a large percentage of posts in this community. You are aware that we do not require your personal input on every subject, right? I mean, look, I don't have a whole lot better to do with my time either, but you don't see me making comments on everything just to see myself talk.

Most of the time I try to just ignore you, cuz, yanno, don't feed the trolls and all, but this going a little too far. WTF is it to you if a community has a commitment to disability access that includes allergies and scent sensitivities? It's not like you were planning on going anyway, and even if you were it's not like it's so damn hard to just not wear your precious perfume/cologne for one day!

just fyi, it's actually the particular meeting space for this orientation (Havurat Shalom) that has disability access policies that include allergies and scent sensitivities. I don't know anything about the Time Trade Circle's stance on this issue.

Thumbs up to you for your eloquent and reasonable response, and agreed thumbs up to TTC for inclusivity. I'm sorry that stuff some people like gives you migraines, though :(

I definitely would not want to be in a room full of intolerant hypochondriacs.
