And Joyce still has stock that she's selling for $5 a stem. They're big and gorgeous, and the thoughtfulness of remembering combined with the restraint not blowing $50+ for the two day price spike has always made this a win-win holiday for me.

Whole Foods has some really nice flowers at good prices...two dozen roses are $20. They also have tulips, potted plants, and other kinds of cut flowers. (I'm talking about the Whole Foods in Medford, on 16)

yeah, i was pretty shocked when i saw a sign outside of a florist in harvard square claim that they had the lowest price for two dozen anywhere in boston or cambridge...$50. madness! the roses at whole foods are really beautiful...and i don't even like roses.

What I prefer to do is on February 13th I lie to a friend and tell him his girlfriend has been cheating on him. For extra efficiency, I like to tape a couple fake E-mails to his front door along with a pair of her underwear. (Don't ask me how I acquired them.) Without fail, the friend will always toss the roses he bought his girlfriend in the trash, and then go out and get shitfaced drunk with me that night. Then after I bring him home and roll him onto his couch in a pool of his own vomit, I remove the roses from his trash and give them to my girlfriend the next day. I've been doing this for the last 10 years, and it works like a charm.

This is what separates the boys from the men. It's all in the planning. Be sure to take them out drinking on an empty stomach, and "harder/faster" is the rule. Several shots in quick succession, but you beg off after the second because "I have to work in the morning." Be sure you know the bartender so they will pour with a heavy hand.

Properly done, you'll come out $30 to the good.

the roses place on the corner of broadway and 16 upped there price to 24 for a dozen. I'm not sure what it was before, I've seen 10 and 12.

If you can make it out to Wilson Farms in Lexington, they have two dozen for about $16 on a regular basis, lots of colours. I would call first, though - they might be sold out.
