I don't know when this started, or why, but the DJ on WMBR radio (88.1) is right now snarkily reading some of the more stupid comments printed on the Somerville Journal's SpeakOut page.

Apparently this happens every week? I see this on http://wmbr.org/www/sched-sat#change :

Saturday, Noon-2pm:
Subject To Change

Always Timely, Never On Time. Music without boundaries. Or taste. Also features idiosyncratic, idiomatic, and idiotic readings of Somerville Speakout.

He's been doing this on WMBR for at least a couple of years. His show used to be on from 2-4, but it was moved earlier this semester. He lives in Somerville, I think near Lincoln Park. Archives are available on the blog for his show (http://subject2blog.blogspot.com/), which also includes his playlists.

The journal recently ran an article (http://www.wickedlocal.com/somerville/archive/x1420955285/SpeakOut-live-Radio-show-airs-Somerville-Journal-s-calls-you-love-to-hate) about his show. Since then, he has had the meta-joy of reading SpeakOut columns on his show in which people call SpeakOut to talk about him reading SpeakOut columns on his show.

Yeah, Patrick has been doing that every week for at least like three years now. I think there's a podcast of just the speakouts if you don't want to listen to the actual radio show.

Googling turned up this Amazon listing (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R38KKG?ie=UTF8&child=B001R3AFPE), though it says they won't actually be available for download for a couple weeks yet.

While we're snarking on the Somerville News, can I just say that "ginormous" is not an okay news headline word (http://www.wickedlocal.com/somerville/news/x1434777864/Governor-wants-19-cent-gas-tax-hike-extra-payments-for-ginormous-SUVs)?

Gah! Clearly one Large Americano was not enough. When is the LJ comment system going to add a fact check in addition to the spell check?

Well who can blame him? Speakout does not make Somerville look that great- its an easy target.

That Speakout feature is horrible (in the Cambridge Chronicle as well). What an awful, awful idea. "Let's see what the people who are too stupid or lazy to take five minutes to write a Letter to the Editor have to say!" Surprisingly enough, it's incoherent and ridiculous. Who could have guessed?

I call the Speakout line whenever I remember to tell them what a horrible idea it is and how they should get rid of it. They have never printed my call.

You clearly did not formulate you call correctly. Your call is required to contain at least five of the following phrases:

[The same concept said 3x, using slightly different phrasing]
"I am calling about..."
"...the kids these days..."
"...someone should do something about this..."
"...the good music, like the Perry Como..."
"The mayor is a bum"
"The mayor is doing a great job"
"It is time we got rid of [elected official]."
"Wake up, Somerville!"
"If you do not like it, then you should move away."
"It is an outrage."
"It is a disgrace."
"Thank you."
"Please print."

... or you could just say:
