Luna Farm CSA

What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  It is a way in which a community and a farmer can have a shared commitment that ensures both the survival of small farms and the availability of fresh, local produce.  Community members become shareholders or subscribers in the farm and receive a weekly allotment of produce.  CSAs provide the farmer with a secure and supportive market, which helps to keep down overhead costs and allows them to invest more in sustainable practices of food production.  Members signup and pay for their subscription in the winter/spring months and then receive produce during the growing season.  This upfront payment allows the farmer to buy seeds, equipment and soil amendments to get the season off to a good start without having to take out loans with high interest rates.  In return the subscribers have the advantage of a direct relationship with their farmer, the knowledge of how and where their food is grown, and the ability to share in the bounties of a farm.

About Luna Farm
Luna Farm is a five-acre farm with two and a half acres in vegetable production.  It is committed to growing with sustainable practices, which includes cover cropping, crop rotation and organic fertilizers like compost and manure.  In addition to managing a 40 member CSA, Luna Farm also sells weekly into a local Co-op that supports emerging farmers, and donates to a local organization that works with new mothers.
The mission of Luna Farm is to protect food access and promote food security within the greater Boston area.

Distribution Site and Time
Somerville Distribution: Tuesdays 5-7pm at the old Powderhouse School on Powderhouse Blvd.

Cost

Each share is $600 for 18-20 weeks of enough produce to feed a family of four.

Donations
Luna Farm is dedicated to promote food security and provide equal access to healthy food.  In the 2009 season Luna Farm will donate one to two shares to the Early Intervention Partnerships Program (EIPP), a program of The Guidance Center, Inc.  EIPP is an organization in Somerville that “provides prenatal and infant support by offering free home visits for pregnant women and mothers of newborn infants. Our mission is to promote the well-being of families and link families to appropriate community resources.”  Some of the women assisted by EIPP have nutritional risk factors and access to fresh produce grown with sustainable methods will hopefully increase their ability to provide them and their newborn infants with adequate nutrition. *

*Please ask how you can help sponsor a share donation.

I run a small farm, Luna Farm, in North Reading and will be distributing CSA shares in Somerville near Davis and Teele Squares.  I have included some information about what a CSA is and about what the farm is like.  Please let me know if you have any questions.   There are only 5 shares left for the Somerville distribution.
Thanks,
Lydia

Looks like they deliver to Davis Square proper. If this is the case, I'm def. interested. I'll post back after I chat with my husband this evening.

This is a very good thing to post about, but it is quite long. Please edit the post to add one or more <lj-cut> tags to hide some of the details behind links. Thank you.

By chance do you have a website and/or a range of the produce that would be available?

hey, umm, in addition to davis i live in north reading (near martins pond and working by the harold parker) - do you have any part-shares available, or farm-picking, or anything? (i also can't possibly eat four people's worth of anything, but being big on local and being awfully local, i gotta ask :)

OK, I am officially looking for someone to split! Terms as as follows:

- cost is split 50/50 ($300 each)
- produce is split 50/50 each type unless agreed upon otherwise at pickup
- both parties to be present at pickup unless the other party has a car and wants to meet somewhere else easily T accessible

Priority goes to rrwf, since he/she posted to my request first :)

It sounds very interesting...

But I would like to know more about who's checking that the practices in place conform to all health standards ("organic" has become a bit of a meaningless label these days) etc.

cool

This is a cool idea. Also how oil market futures started.... This way seems a little better for everyone.
