Dear Davis Sq.

First Church Somerville, United Church of Christ, an open and affirming congregation, is having an Ash Wednesday Service this Wednesday at 7 PM, including the imposition of ashes. Please bring a piece of clay pottery you'd be willing to break during the service, as a sign of our brokeness. The broken pieces of pottery will be used in an art piece that will proceed during Lent, and will be presented on Easter.

The theme for our service is "Broken."

The music for the service is from Taize.

We're at 89 College Ave. in Davis Sq., the church with the rainbow flag.

Rev. Laura Ruth

If there's an underused phrase in this world, it's "Interfaith Donkey Walk". A check of Google shows only two links, both referring to this event.

Perhaps it shall be my next LJ user name.

what does "as a sign of our brokeness" mean?

Dangerous territory...

I think it means that we are all losers and so we have to repent. And join a church. And donate. Or something like that. Or perhaps it has to do with the fact that many people these days are broke. In which case they cannot donate. These are all guesses. I'd be curious to know too.

Could be, but it's unlikely... "Broken" sounds a bit stronger than "not perfect". There are plenty of non perfect things that are not broken. A "broken" person is not just not perfect, in my opinion, it's somebody who has given up and cannot "put it together". Sounds like a fun party!

I think "brokenness" is the theological term that the poster was aiming for. But if you bring an empty piggy bank to smash, you can celebrate your brokenness and your brokeness all in one blow.

i get the original sin type stuff, if that's what you mean.

just seems a really odd/awkward choice of term though. maybe brokenness? still, someone calling me broken seems one part high school poetry and one part a little too harsh. and if they really mean like, without cash, that just makes me giggle a little. which i don't think is the point. oh well. just thinking out loud!

i know, it just seems odd to me, as i had not heard that phrase before. i guess this is why i steer clear of this stuff, lol.

i'm not anything particular but fall into what i've deemed the 'athiest by default' category due to my somewhat strange upbringing. so i get curious too [which is why i asked] but also then typically easily just confused followed by 'meh' about most of it.

oh totally, make no mistake [this is mostly for the op i guess] that i only asked a question out of curiosity and feel that, even though certain things aren't for me, if it gives someone else hope and gets them through the day i'm all for it.

Even though I come across as snarky, I'm very tolerant in practice. It just amuses me when people get defensive about this stuff. Also, I would like to know some of the happy folks who go to a meeting of broken people! All I have to do for that is go to work! :)

lol yeah, as a cynical bitch most of the time, don't need any help there ;p but on a more serious note, for me to look at and be accepting of religion i view it as hope, and showing up having to say you're 'broken' just seems so...the opposite. but hey, not everyone thinks like i do, heh. and yes, i just try to be...sometimes overly reassuring or something in cases like this? since the post is obviously totally fine and i don't intend to get into a deep philosophical discussion with the op or anything like that.

too tired :p
