used tires?

I could use a set of tires and I'm feeling cheap.
Does anyone have any recommendations for places around Somerville (or as far as maybe Revere or Waltham) that sell used tires? It'd be cool if they can mount them, too, but if not I can have my usual garage do that... (and yeah, I'm checking Craigslist)

EDIT: Tires acquired, thanks for the replies!

Oh, here too.

Ernie over at Ball Square Auto has used tires, and he'll mount 'em for you.

How do "used tires" come about? Do tires go out of fashion? I would assume people who shelled out money for tires would use them until they're no longer safe to be used... in which case, why would you want them?
No snark, just really curious... it seems akin to asking for used insulin and needles (which I would TOTALLY snark).

If someone's junking a car, the tires may still be good enough to resell.

Eh, sometimes people change tires on a whim. Or buy seasonal tires and never use them.
Last year, I changed a full set of tires and changed tire brand/type. One of the (changed out) tires was still relatively new because I had changed it out due to a flat. Yeah, I don't understand that paragraph either, but magically a not-so-used tire came from the situation. :)

If the car's getting junked for some reason, the tires may still be good (even quite good, if it's because a new car was totalled in a wreck). Also, certain kinds of punctures can be reliably and safely repaired, but the original owner may have wanted a new tire (or all four new, so that wear patterns match).

In short, there are all sorts of reasons people might get rid of tires that are still entirely safe to use.

I'm not sure about used tires but if you decide to go with new tires you could try Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com/). It's still a lot for a set of tires but it's better than what you'd get at a brick-and-mortar store.

You can have TireRack drop ship them to your favorite mechanic, which is a plus.

So out of curiosity, did you wind up getting them someplace that might be worth sharing?

Also let us know how old the tires are....

You might want to check whatever used car parts retailers are left down on Webster Ave. behind Union Square. It's interesting because some in the city have been trying to force these companies out for years, however, as this request illustrates there is certainly a need for this service (which will probably become more acute in the coming months), and they have to exist somewhere, don't they?

I found a pretty cheap deal on new tires from Town Fair, they beat online pricing and will install for around $60, not too bad.
