Time.com thinks the Boston Globe is losing so much money that it will stop printing the newspaper altogether and become an online paper only:

5. The Boston Globe is, based on several accounts, losing $1 million a week. One investment bank recently said that the paper is only worth $20 million. The paper is the flagship of what the Globe's parent, The New York Times, calls the New England Media Group. NYT has substantial financial problems of its own. Last year, ad revenue for the New England properties was down 18%. That is likely to continue or get worse this year. Supporting larger losses at the Globe will become nearly impossible. Boston.com, the online site that includes the digital aspects of the Globe, will probably be all that will be left of the operation.

Dan Kennedy at Media Nation says this list is not from Time magazine.

Time needs to pay more attention to the external content that they allow their logo to be placed on.

Yes, as Ron pointed out it's not from time, and it's grossly inaccurate. If people care so much, buy a subscription!

A big +1 on that.

Seriously, if you haven't purchased a subscription (and I'm not saying anything about Pearly), then don't complain about the Globe ceasing print operations.

But what about those of us who have subscribed for a long time, but find the product quality and quantity decreasing to the point where it may not be worth the price anymore?

Yeah, as a long-time subscriber I've been starting to think about that more and more. Also, once you subscribe, there isn't much more you can do to help.

Yeah, I cared a lot and paid for a daily subscription for years. I'm just barely clinging to a Sunday subscription now (not sure I'll keep it after they dump City Weekly). Takes me 5 min to read anything worth reading on the online Globe (before moving onto UH and other local blogs)....

This will be a major shame, we will have a real rough time getting quality local news. I would love to see them scale the printing way down and at least maintain their current level of content generation. Maybe transition to a Metro style of publication.

Please no. That rag is nearly worthless.

I don't mean in terms of the style of writing and content. I mean in terms of the format of the physical paper, and/or distribution method.

That's probably the way its heading, although they may keep a "New York Times Boston Edition" around for a while as well. I agree with Ron that the problem is that I have subscribed for 10+ years and it gets worse and worse. I don't even read it every day anymore but I keep suscribing because I am attached to it.

I feel bad for the trees, tho. Maybe they could cease daily operations (or go "Metro" on us, which to some extent is happening already) and print a better sunday edition?

If it goes online only...

They'll be charging for all access.

Perhaps the Globe would be in less trouble if they actually reported the news, and not their opinion of the news.
The only thing I will miss are the obituaries.
