Does anyone know of a good place to purchase tires in or near Davis Square?

I go to the tire place in Union Sq near the Union Sq Veternarian (I think that it's on Summer St. or what turns into Summer St.). I've not had a problem there yet. My only complaint is that they try to get you to buy tire insurance (well, you have to ask them to not give that to you if you don't want it).

They balance the tire on the rim (ie: put on those lead weights to get the tire to be just right) and install them for you and discard the old ones. Completely full service.

the tire insurance i've always bought has more than paid for itself over the years! you must have better flat-tire karma than i, lucky man.

It only pays for the tire itself, not the installation or the disposal. Only covers the tire if its within their stated time frame and/or % wear on the treads. I view it as Vegas where the odds are always in the favor of the house.

Also, if you keep your tires around the prescribed pressure range, you'll experience less punctures from road hazards. Low pressure gives less traction and is more susceptible to damage.

i got my tires from Direct tire, and the insurance DID cover installation and disposal, so it always worked out. i think we just lived in a bad area - haven't had a flat in ages, but when we lived in watertown, both vehicles regularly had screws or glass through a tire.

have you considered going to a place like TireRack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) and getting the tires mounted locally? Also, some places will price-match the online stores--I know NTB will, friends of mine have done it.

Maynard & Lesieur(sp?), in Nashua, NH, are a long-established family business that has a very good reputation, but that may be a bit far afield for you.

Either--but if you need new tires *today*, you probably don't want to wait for the shipping. You're better off going somewhere locally.

Tire Rack has a list of installers on their website. There are some in Cambridge & Somerville IIRC; there's a place on their website where you can put in your zip code and they'll point you at a list of installers local to you, along with customer reviews.

I've bought tires from NTB twice now - they were excellent both times. Caveat: Since I bought the tires, Sears (the former parent company) sold NTB to Tire King (or some such). The selection of tires has changed since, but the service still seemed OK.

Other people swear by Hogan Tire in Woburn (next to the Toyota dealership).
