an e-mail I got from Stephanie Hirsch at city hall:

Here's a quick reminder that street sweeping resumes tomorrow (Wednesday, April 1st). Below is the City's official notice. If you do not already receive phone or e-mail notices of street closures, parking rules, etc. (you may have heard about the CTY calls from Tom Champion), click here to be added to the CTY call list: http://faqs.somervillema.intelligovsoftware.com/cty.aspx. You'll need to enter your street address, since many of the alerts relate to very specific streets or neighborhoods.

Street Sweeping Reminder
Regular street sweeping schedules will resume Wednesday, April 1st.
Residents are reminded that they must adhere to posted notifications of schedules, and move vehicles to the appropriate side of the street on sweeping days in their neighborhood. Failure to comply with street sweeping parking regulations will result in a $50 fine. For more information regarding street sweeping procedures, please call the City's 311 constituent service line.

Please note that the City’s street sweeping parking enforcement season will resume on Wednesday April 1st. Residents are reminded that they should note the schedules posted on street signs in their neighborhoods and move their vehicles in order to keep designated curbs accessible for the sweepers on the dates and times indicated. Street sweeping will continue on a regular schedule through December 31st. Failure to comply with street sweeping parking regulations will result in a $50 fine.

Street sweeping is an essential public works activity that not only keeps the city looking cleaner, but also reduces the risk of flooding due to catch-basin clogging and storm drain back-up.

For additional information, please call 311. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our city cleaner.

Huge heads up for (at least) the side streets west of the Brown School:

"Bad Tuesday" and "Bad Wednesday" fall on back-to-back days this month. So when you move your car on the Tuesday the 7th (or 21st), keep in mind you gotta move it again the very next day.

The timing of when this starts is both amusing and unfortunate. Ten bucks says at least one person is going to be told "Hey, you know sweeping starts tomorrow, you'd better move your car" and they'll respond "Ha ha, yeah right, April Fool's."

It may have had something to do with fines tripling overnight to get more in line with parking fines in line with Boston and Brookline.

I'm exaggerating, but when fines increased, there was the comparison by City Hall to Boston, and I forget where else. It's part of the multifacted comparisons the city was making about that time: Parking fines, we need to get in line with Boston and Cambridge. Property value/rate calculation, now we compare to Arlington, Medford.

Except when we come to development at Assembly Square - how about Chelsea and Everett for comparables. Drive me up a wall, already.

Thank goodness, bike riding is no fun when the streets are full of a winter's worth of post-snowdrift gravel/trash/gunk.

It's because we don't need as much room in our gutters for dead hookers. We're much better at recycling.
