I'm on the purple fruit juice kick, and am wondering where local I can get hard-to-find juices like chokeberry ( aronia ), acai, elderberry, blackcurrant, bilberry, etc. I hear Trader Joe's had aronia juice at one time, but I haven't seen it there.

Looking for a 100% berry juice, not mixed with apple juice or anything. I plan to mix it myself. Also looking for reasonable cost; I'd expect a berry juice to cost $5 a quart, but I don't know if I'd pay $5 for a pint.

I've seen black currant and acai at Stop&Shop off of Rt 28 (near Foss Park).

The currant I've seen in the produce section with the plastic jug juices (like apple cider). Both I've seen in the juice section past the vegetables, tofu, but before the bulk potatoes (across from the salad bar almost).

No clue what can be had in the health food (last aisle).

Russian grocers generally have some pretty odd berry juices. I only know of one in alston though.

I think that must be a lost verse to norwegian wood or something.

There is also the Bazaar market on Beacon between Short Street and Summit Ave in Brookline.

Have you tried whole foods in fresh pond yet?

Farmer's Bounty used to stock this line of Bulgarian juices and often had some of those that you mentioned. I'm fairly sure they were blended though. Also I don't think they have them any more.

Which is to say I second the Russian grocer comment.

I'm pretty sure Harvest Co-Op has some. Blackcurrant for certain. At least, they have had it in the past.

This isn't exactly what you are looking for, I realize, but the Shaw's in Porter Square stocks the Japanese Kagome juices in their health food section. The Purple Roots and Fruits drink is really good, but it is a blend of many purple things. There's also a burgandy berries drink, I think.

I've seen acai at both Whole Foods and TJs.

I've seen large glass bottles of Hungarian pomegranite juice at the White Hen Pantry in Ball Square (but they don't have it all of the time).

Why am I suddenly getting so many spam e-mails advertising acai products? I don't think I've ever been spammed by a fruit before.

Blame it on Oprah. I think she must have had a show that featured some kind of acai weight-loss program.
