For those of you who have sold clothes to second hand stores...which is the best in the area?

I have tons of clothes I wanna get rid of. Whatever I can't sell I'll just give to goodwill.

Poor Little Rich Girl takes clothes on consignment -- see their website for the list of rules. When I made an appointment last week, the first available one was for May 10, so be prepared to wait a while.

Second Time Around in Harvard also takes clothes on consignment.

Not Davis Square, but The Garment District has open purchasing hours once a week (more soon). www.garmentdistrict.com

And, Second Chances provides free clothing to several Somerville-based homelessness and anti-poverty programs. We have a donation bin in Assembly Square. www.secondchances.org

Second chance sounds great. How can you work out getting a receipt though?

The IRS does not require a receipt for donations that are made at donation bins. More details on donations of in-kind goods are available in IRS publications 526 and 561.
If you need a receipt, you can drop off at our clothing drives in June or September in Somerville.

I just saw your post, and wanted to apologize for the wait.

Turn of season appointments get booked up fast, but as soon as you have an account established you do not need appointments.

You can drop off the first two weeks of each month which an active account, so I do try to make it easier for the consignor as soon as they have that first appointment under the belt (so we can go over all of the conditions of the contract etc.)

Again, sorry for the long wait, I know it is annoying. :(

Sincerely,
Meredith

Oh, I am sorry that you have time constraints like that...You might want to call and ask the store if there have been any cancellations, if you can do a mid-week, non-weekend appointment you might have some luck.

My other suggestions would really depend on what kind of things you have.

We are trend/style driven, looking for things that are just a few years old. I would give the Garment District open buy night a try, but you will not get much $$$ for your items, but if you just need to unload that might be your best bet.

If you are leaving the country, having someone buy outright will be best for you because consignment involves contracts with pickup and payment dates etc.

Good luck! :)

For a quick sell, the GD is the best bet. Their purchasing hours are currently Thursdays from 4:00-7:45 (best to double check the tail-end). It takes about 30-40 minutes for the staff to go over stuff. Whatever they don't buy, they can leave for their "$1.50 A Pound" area, so you don't even have to haul it to Goodwill.
Cashback is 35% of their total sale price, or you can get store credit worth 50% of their total sale price.
