Dear Davis Square,

It is that time again, time for the most fun religious Christian celebration in Davis Sq. Yes, it's the Interfaith Donkey Walk, Palm Sunday Morning at 9 AM. That's this Sunday, starting at Powder House Park.

At 9 o'clock, we start the festivities by telling the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, riding a donkey - he was coming for Passover, eh? We sing a song, and then we parade.

First Church Somerville UCC's marching band will lead the parade from Powder House Park, down College Ave. to Davis Sq. In Davis Sq., where we will pray for peace in the world and we'll pray for Somerville.

Chester the Donkey, on loan from the Heifer Project, will be with us.

Come join us, bring your kids, bring rhythm instruments, everyone can play with the Marching Band.

First Church's Palm Sunday Service begins at 10 AM. Our choir will sing "Lamb of God: a cantata for Lent." After the service, there will be a silver tea and hot cross buns served.

For Easter, there is multi-church Sunrise Service at 6 AM in Powder House Park, up at the top. Joe Zarro, student intern from First Church Somerville UCC, a student from Harvard Divinty School will offer an Easter reflection. After the Sunrise Service, all are invited to a pancake breakfast at Community Baptist Church.

First Church Somerville UCC will have a Service of Resurrection at 10 AM. Our service will include a brass ensemble, a blue grass band, the children's choir, the adult choir, and a community singing of the Hallelujah Chorus. Sr. Pastor Molly Baskette will preach.

Other services for Holy Week at First Church Somerville:

Morning Prayers, M-F, 7:30 AM
Holy Wednesday, 6 PM, Rest and Bread: a service of prayer and Communion
Maundy Thursday, 7 PM, a Tenebrae Service
Good Friday, 7:30AM-5:30 PM , our sanctuary will be open all day for quiet prayer
Easter Sunday, April 12, Multi-Church Sunrise Service,  6 AM at Powderhouse Park, Service of the Resurrection, 10 AM

UCC marching band? I don't remember that from the last time I watched this event, two years ago. Is it new?

Nope, I don't play an instrument and I'm not Christian, but I'll get up to watch this.

(While you're praying for world peace and for Somerville, could you also please spare a few prayers for the Boston Globe? They need all they can get right now.)

NY Times Company threatens to close Boston Globe. (But I don't want to hijack this thread.)

Saw that... Fine, somebody will create a volunteer-based Boston Globe.

Neat!

I honestly thought this was a belated April Fools post. :-)

I gotta hand it to the religious folks, their drama/stories are by far the best! No wonder you guys have so many followers. If science was this fun and bizarre, people would be flocking to science labs and schools like they flock to church. :-)

I agree, it's fun, like a carnival.

As long as one sees it as some kind of ancient Watchmen series all is well. When one confuses it with reality, then we have a problem. Seriously.

The Cambridge Science Festival starts three weeks from today. I'll bet that plenty of UCC members (and followers of other religions) will participate in and enjoy it.

Yay!

The two are not mutually exclusive.

Unfortunately, they are.

Not to say that you cannot talk and get along with your religious nut neighbor. You just don't talk about it and walk around his/her pocket of insanity. But that's not exactly what you mean by "not mutually exclusive", I suspect.

A lot of us (belonging to different faiths or no faiths) would appreciate your not applying the epithets 'religious nut' and 'insanity' to all Christians, Jews, and adherents of other religions in Somerville. Thank you.

Sorry, I was only referring to the religious nuts. Not too all religious people. There is a difference. The first kind believes that whomever does not belong to their religion will not be "saved". I'm sure that is only a small minority of religious people.

I'll just point out that you are responding to a post by a minister at First Church UCC on College Avenue -- which is about as far as you get from 'religious nut' while still being Christian.

Some friendly advice: A little nuance goes a long way.

No, see above. Only those who believe their faith is the right one (based on no empirical evidence, by definition) and because of that they are somewhat superior to others.
