The runner up BOS winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to www.beersummit.com. Additional prizes will also be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each of the 26 categories judged.

The LAST day for entries to be received is October 29th, 2004 and the Winner will be announced at the Beer Summit Homebrewers Dinner on Nov 13th, 2004. The Beer Summit Homebrew Competition is a BJCP sanctioned event and will be using their style guide.

Okay, I've got to say that Sam Adams paying $1,000 for a brand new beer recipe that will generate tens of thousands in profit for them is a great deal for them.... Oktoberfest, excellent! However, Sam Adams potentially exploiting the hobbyist brewer is something I'm not so sure about. Consider that all entries require the recipe, and that entries then become the property of the Beer Summit, LLC corporation -- recipes are not a requirement of another local BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition -- there is the potential for exploitation of local craft homebrew artisans' skills.

Boston Beerworks generally loses money on its specialty brews, but if you have concerns about their unduly profiting from your hobby hard work, you can certainly send questions to the competition's organizers. Near as I can tell, the worst that will come of this is bragging rights.

Just as an aside, the Fair seems like an event that really deserves to have its own post rather than being relegated to a reaction to this one. Trust me, there's room enough for everyone to play.
