Hi all! I'm brand new here (moved on Wednesday from Seattle) and I live in between Porter and Davis Square. What are some cool places to check out. Stores, restaurants, coffee shops, anything really. I'm a vegetarian, so any good veggie restaurant suggestions would be appreciated too. Of course places in Cambridge or near the Longwood Medical area are good too.

Walk down Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard; there's a ton of stores there. Many of them are too expensive to consider much ;), but there's a lot of lovely stuff there and it's my mecca for Christmas shopping. There's nice pottery and stuff right in Porter (Mud Flat; by the CVS, I think).

I third or fifth or whatever the Diesel rec. And the Blue Shirt, for veggie. The Somerville Theater has cheap second-run movies (and is often playing something interesting) and some concerts as well.

Sugar & Spice is a fairly new, tasty, reasonably priced Thai place on Mass Ave just on the outbound side of Porter. I'm not vegetarian so I haven't really investigated that aspect of the menu but it's Thai so I'm sure it has useful stuff.

Ace Wheelworks, on Elm street right behind Porter, is my beloved bike shop. And there's a great bike path that goes through Davis and continues about ten miles to Bedford; very nice if you're into that sort of thing (or walking or rollerblading or whatever).

The view from the roof of the Tufts library is really pretty.
