The following is an e-mail I got from the City of Somerville. They also robo-called me with it, but I don't know if they robo-called anyone in Cambridge.

--------------------
This is Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department with an important message for residents living near the Porter Square area.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, a young female, walking alone toward Elm Street from the Porter Square Area, was grabbed from behind and knocked to the ground by an unknown male. The attacker attempted to sexually assault her in the vicinity of Elm Street and White Street. The victim fought back and was able to escape, but was unable to describe her attacker.

We are asking anyone who may have been in this area between 1:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, or anyone who has information about this incident, to please contact Somerville Police Detectives at 617 625-1600, extension 7224.

Though the Porter Square / West Somerville area remains among the safest areas of our city, we all need to remain vigilant and take commonsense personal safety measures, especially when walking alone.

As a reminder, if you see a crime in progress, or see anything or anyone acting suspicious, please call 911 immediately.

Got the robocall.

This is why I'm in favor of as many cameras as possible in public. Good deterrent effect or at least to help find the guy. Don't really understand why so many on the previous threads don't see it this way.

Because they don't work

They don't work, they are a freaky invasion of privacy, and when something big happens which raises the public's fear and increases the calls for such big-brother infrastructure (like the London 7/7 bombings), they always seem to - ahem - "malfunction".

If they always malfunction, that should assuage your anxiety about them. Perhaps they are fake to begin with. But criminals don't know that.

I'm sorry, but can you spell out for me how a camera on a public street is an invasion of privacy? Is it an invasion of privacy if I stand on the street corner taking photographs?

How do I sign up for these email alerts? Googling and the Somervillema.gov website revealed nothing.
