UPDATE: I found my cat in my garage this morning.  I had the door cracked open the past few days and she was there this morning.  She hadn't been there before, so she must have come in the middle of the night.  I stuck my head in and called her name a few times then heard her meowing, in a sort of angry/scared/loud/howly way.   She wouldn't come to me at first, but after about 5 or 10 minutes she came closer and let me pick her up.  She seems fine.  She was a little dusty and she was hungry, but is otherwise ok.  Thanks for all the advice and the watchful eyes.

ORIGINAL POST:
I lost my cat. :(

Black cat with white on her chest and her belly. Named Penny, she sometimes answers to her name. Has a collar and microchip. She is probably scared, as she is an indoor only cat and is fairly shy around people she doesn't know.

Please call Grace at (617) 970-8919 if you find her or have any information.

Lost Tuesday April 14th on Newbury Street, Teele Square

I'm sorry to hear about your cat and I hope she comes home right away.

If she has a microchip, how come you can't find her?

They don't exactly help you locate your cat. They just make sure your cat is easily identifiable once they are found (cats are not usually very good at keeping their collars since they are such squirmy, avid climbers and have a thing for small spaces).

It's not a homing device like those radio collars they attach to wildlife. It's just a serial number that animal control or a vet can scan at very close range ( as in inches ) with a special transmitter. Same principle as those ID badges you swipe over a pad at work.

Indoor cats often dont know what their home looks like from the outside. Try placing her litter box on your porch. Odds are a shy cat would still be hiding somewhere in the neighborhood, and the scent will lead her home.

On the same vein:
Take small chunks of the used litter (usually the poop) and put it in the corners of your lot. It spreads the scent more than just the litterbox.

When we lost Phantom long ago, we were unfortuante in that I had just cleaned the litter box. But we left the window open and the dry food out. We got all excited when the food started going away... until we found one of the neighborhood cats chowing down during the night.

If there's any sound which makes the Penny come, walk around the house and then around the nearby blocks making that noise.

For example, we have a plastic box of cat treats. The sound of shaking it gets our cats running every time.

In the long run: you can train your cats to come when you whistle. All you need to do is whistle every time you put the food down. It's very effective for getting them to come back inside.

She's a very adorable kitty and I can only imagine how stressful it is to have lost her! That's right around where I live so I promise to definitely keep a sharp eye out for her and report any sightings right away...

i am so sorry. remember that cats can survive for a long time on their own, and it's great that she has a collar and microchip. the outlook is good but you must be terribly distressed. i will definitely keep my eyes open for your baby.

Oh, she's adorable. Good luck finding her! At least this didn't happen in the coldest part of the year.

Yeah, it's good that it has gotten warmer. This makes me paranoid about my own indoor cat, who is also very shy. If you haven't done so, make sure you ask your neighbors to check their basements/garages/under the porch/etc., since she may just be hiding nearby.

Oh i'm so sorry to hear this! I live right near you, so i'll keep an eye out for sure (also i tend to snuggle every random cat i see).

It sounds like you're trying alot of really good options, but i did want to throw in one more that may seem really obvious. When my indoor only cat got out a few years back, i was trying EVERYTHING, and nothing seemed to be working. BUT: i ended up going outside on the fourth day and literally YELLING his name as LOUDLY as i possibly could while shaking his food container vigorously. Lo and behold, he came trotting out of the woods (this was not in Boston).

Cats tend to not venture very far AT ALL from home, so they can hear you. That said, my cat is very gregarious, and it sounds like yours is a bit skittish. She's probably VERY close to your house, so look in the really obvious small spaces around your house.

Good luck and don't be afraid to make a fool out of yourself calling her name and whatnot :)

I saw your flyers near Rudy's this morning, I hope you find your kitty soon! We have several black cats that run around over on Conwell Ave, is she still wearing the blue collar, and is that a little kink at the end of her tail? Any other identifiers helps :)

So sorry about your lost cat. My indoor cat escaped from my house last summer and was missing for several days. It was such a stressful time. I put her food, water, and some toys on my deck in an attempt to lure her back. I woke up one morning, looked in the backyard, and found her drinking out of her water bowl. She was skinny and a little scratched up after her "walkabout", but was otherwise fine. I hope Penny comes home soon.

Just a spot of hope. Ten years ago my cat got loose for the first time (9 yo house cat at the time). I looked for her every day and screamed her name in this terribly annoying nagging voice that for whatever reason always got her to come running. It took over a week but one night I opened my window and called her name and swore I heard a meow. It was faint. I darted out in the snow and ran in the direction, stopped and called again. I did this several times following the meows. She was three doors down in a wooded area behind a neighbors house, starved of course and a bit worse for the wear frost bite wise but alive. Its amazing how close a house cat can be and still be completely lost. Don't give up.

YAY!

Great news! Congrats on finding her. Whenever my cat sticks his nose too close to the door I tell him NO CATS OUTSIDE and he comes back in. I'm sure your cat is extremely relieved to be back in her own territory.
