Found parakeet hopping around in traffic near Bway and Cedar. Had clipped wings, likely to get hit. Now carrying frightened parakeet in bucket. :( Knocked on doors w open windows but no luck. Animal cntrl closed till Monday. Halp!?

EDIT: got ahold of vet friend, who came by to assist. Unfortunately, turns out bird (which she says is actually a budgie) didn't have clipped wings, was just tired from the escape (and/or kinda dumb) when I caught it. So, errr.... it got out when she opened the bucket. :/. Good news is that vet says it'll be safe and healthy in this climate, so... enjoy your new budgie, neighborhood?

Seriously, sorry if it was yours. We tried. :/

On females it actually turns brown, except for a few color mutations. /bird geek

I'm glad you tried to help her, and I hope she finds a safe place to live. I'm not so sure about budgies surviving the winters here, but I suppose it's possible.

So I knew they were from Australia, but I didn't know they got winters in that part of Australia like we do here. Well, that makes me feel better about the budgie that was flying around -my- neighborhood last summer (it was never close enough to try to capture).

I saw "wild" budgies in Chicago - they form packs and come to bird feeders. It was really weird. So yeah, I think Boston winter is not a problem.

Monk Parakeets. They're actually a lot bigger than budgies and they have them in New York too. They are the sworn enemy of Con Edison on account of building their nests around electrical equipment, heh.

So those were budgies! They were so big I thought they were small parrots.

No no. Monk Parakeets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk_parakeet) (Myiopsitta monachus) aren't the same as budgerigars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar) (a.k.a. Budgies, Melopsittacus undulatus).

The term "parakeet" is actually a very general term used mostly in America that doesn't really denote anything from a taxonomic point of view. It basically refers to any small parrot type bird with a broad tail.

Ah, so I think when I first heard "Monk parakeets" I heard "Monk parrots" and may have been spreading misinformation for years. I am schooled.

Haha. You're forgiven. I think there's actually more misinformation about these birds out there than real information.

I knew quakers (monk parakeets) did that, but I'd never heard of feral budgie flocks in the northern US.

dang, I have a bird cage from my old cockateil that died. Would have been great to hold the critter in til it's home was found. Hope it's ok.

If I had lost a little budgie, I'd be *infinitely* happier to know it is now flying around free somewhere in S'ville, and not stuck to the bottom of someone's tires.

YaY on your for the rescue!

I keep a full bird feeder out back. Maybe she'll find it and have a nice meal.

(Sorry, this is my only bird icon.)

Oh, feel free to take it! I don't remember where I got it, so no need to credit.

There's a bird store in McGoun Square. Maybe it escaped from there? Or from someone who bought a bird from there?
