Religious tolerance reasons, perhaps? I had to look it up, but a "Moonie" is a member of the Unification Church. I can't imagine "I am not a Jew" would have lasted either.
I kind of like that it's just "I am not." It seems like at least once a week during the summer I see a group standing there trying to figure what he's not.
I read about that. All of the statues were modeled after real people, and the original guy that sold flowers wore a shirt or button that said "I am not a Moonie" because there were a preponderance of Moonies that would canvass around T stops (rather like the Scientologists in nice weather these days). In order to promote his own sales, he made it clear that there was no affiliation. If I can find the original link, I'll post it here.
I don't think that's comparable, when it comes to whether it would've lasted. Most people think of Jewish as a religion, and Moonies as a cult, and social standards about cults are different than about religions.
I used to live in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle. There's a piece of public art there that people are constantly dressing up in interesging ways, Waiting for the Interurban (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9060). I think it would be excellent if wry and clever dressing of our statuary became a local custom here too.
Was it on his birthday? If we know when the statues were installed, I think it would be awesome to have a little party for them in the square each year. =:)
The statue of the Duke of Wellington that stands in front of the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow regularly (and famously) sports a traffic cone on his head. http://www.edwud.com/photos/450/duke_of_wellington_traffic_cone_glasgow.jpg
Unfortunately, they didn't get a mask on the guy on the other side of the T station fast enough. When I walked by, he was clearly writhing in agony (http://www.flickr.com/photos/logoparenthetes/2929979441/)... and that horrible couple was just staring at him.
